FOOTBALL Sebring rejoices in victory

The Trojans snapped a 36-game losing streak by beating Conotton Valley.
BOWERSTON -- In 48 minutes Saturday, the Sebring Trojans' football team erased years worth of frustration.
Sebring 20, Conotton Valley 19. The scoreboard had not looked this good for the Trojans in 36 games dating back to Sept. 10, 1999 -- when Sebring last won, beating Western Reserve 42-28.
"The kids are ecstatic right now," said Joe Lee, second-year Sebring coach. "Hopefully this will give them confidence, especially with close games."
After snapping its 36-game losing streak, the Trojans (1-0) returned to Sebring only to be greeted by the local fire and police departments, who paraded the team back to the high school.
"Word [of victory] spread real fast," Lee said.
The Trojan defense shut down three Conotton Valley drives within the 10-yard line. The last stop came during a two-point conversion run attempt with 1:15 left that would've given the Rockets the lead.
"We just stopped it," Lee said. "We were kind of shocked they went for it [rather than tying the game with an extra point]."
Sebring running back Micheal Stryffeler opened his team's scoring with a 45-yard touchdown run.
Sebring quarterback Dave Dickins then found running backs Josh Brooks and Josh Hines for touchdown passes for his only two completions of the game.
Brooks scored during a fourth-and-goal situation from Conotton Valley's 16-yard line in the third quarter. Hines' 52-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter proved the game-winner.
"Our seniors went their first three years without a win," Lee said. "They were not sure if they could put it together, but they found out they could."
Windham 50, Southington 19
SOUTHINGTON -- Running back Jay Reed rushed for four touchdowns as visiting Windham routed Southington.
Windham opened the game by scoring 35 unanswered first-half points, with Reed providing three touchdowns, including a 61-yard score.
Quarterback Kevin Swiger led Southington in the losing effort, rushing for a touchdown and throwing one to Patrick Stantial.
Dusty Coakley, Jim Sands, Bryce McLean and Matt Heller also added scores for Windham.
