DISTRICT Uniontown Lake topples Boardman
Cloverleaf blasted Canton Timken, 40-6, and Rayland Buckeye topped Wilson, 48-6.
UNIONTOWN -- Uniontown Lake took a 14-0 lead and its defense held off Boardman as the Blue Streaks came out on top, 21-7, in a season-opening football game Friday.
The loss snapped the Spartans' nine-game opening day win streak.
Lake's 14-0 lead came before Boardman's John Fahey scored on a 7-yard run in the third quarter to pull the Spartans within seven, but the Blue Streaks sealed their victory in the fourth.
Trailing 14-0 early in the third quarter, Boardman failed to convert a 4th-and-inches play inside Lake's 20-yard-line. The Spartans, however, ended up scoring and Fahey also made the extra-point kick to close the gap to 14-7.
Lake, however, put the game away midway through the fourth quarter when Jordan Howard picked up teammate Kyle Sodergren's fumbled catch at Boardman's 1-yard line.
Mike Justice had three PATs for the winners.
Sodergren had a 17-yard touchdown reception from John Rutan that gave the Blue Streaks a 7-0 lead.
A.J. Workman scored from 2 yards out in the second quarter to give Lake its 14-0 advantage.
Boardman gained 134 yards on the ground and 79 passing, while Lake picked up 180 rushing and 86 passing.
Lake had a 16-13 advantage in first downs.
Boardman senior Brad Beck gained 138 yards on 23 carries, while Spartan senior quarterback Josh Susany completed 8-of-13 passes.
Lake's workhorse was running back Workman with 149 yards on 35 carries. Blue Streaks triggerman John Rutan completed 6-of-11 passes.
Cloverleaf 40, Canton Timken 6
CANTON -- Timken managed just six points in the third quarter as Cloverleaf managed to gain 247 yards rushing on 41 carries.
John Morfchek and Brandon Akens each tallied twice for Cloverleaf.
Haywood Freeman scored on an 86-yard run for Timken in the third quarter.
Rayland Buckeye 48, Wilson 6
