War memorial committee
STRUTHERS -- A committee formed to erect a war veterans memorial in Struthers organized Aug. 11 and elected coordinators for the project. Struthers is the only community in the area that does not have a memorial honoring veterans, said Gene Yuhas, one of the coordinators.
The memorial committee meets at 7 p.m. the third Monday of every month at VFW Post 3538, 157 Lowellville Road. The general public may attend. Committee coordinators are Yuhas, Steve Miner, Bill Pearch and John Loshuk. Other officers are: treasurer, Dorothy McLaughlin; recording secretary, Amelia S. Zaluski; head trustee, Daniel Hurite; and sergeant-at-arms, John Gavaran.
RETIRED
22 years in the Navy
Senior Chief Petty Officer Daniel J. Lucarell retired June 27 from the Navy after 22 years active duty. Lucarell, an aviation structural mechanic in a mine sweeper helicopter unit, is a son of Anthony C. and Rita L. Lucarell of Boardman.
Lucarell, 40, had duty assignments in New Jersey, Virginia, California, Texas, and last servedi at the Navy Manpower Analysis Center in Tennessee. He also served in Panama, Japan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the Persian Gulf.
Lucarell and his wife, the former Colleen Kirven of Boardman, and children, Joscelyn, Justeenand Daniel, live in Brighton, Tenn.

ADVANCED TRAINING
Army sergeant course
Army National Guard Master Sgt. Allen J. Lockard Jr. graduated from the two-year Army Sergeants Major Academy Nonresident Course (NRC) at Fort Bliss, Texas. Students must successfully complete the course to be promoted to the ranks of sergeant major and command sergeant major, and it is the primary method for reserve noncommissioned officers to complete the sergeants major course via the NRC Web site or through correspondence. Students who satisfactorily complete correspondence requirements are eligible to attend the 17-day resident course at the academy to complete further training to be official graduates of the sergeants majors course.
Lockard, with 20 years' military service, is a recruiting team leader for Detachment 2, State Area Command in Indiana, Pa. He is the son of Allen J. and Mary Lou Lockard of Columbiana and is a 1983 graduate of Columbiana Senior High School.
Mechanic training
Army Pvt. Samuel J. Douglas graduated from the light-wheel vehicle mechanic advanced individual training (AIT) course at Fort Jackson, S.C. Douglas is the son of Rodney and Carol Spaulding of New Castle, Pa.
Petroleum supply
Army Pvt. Andrew D. Thomas graduated from the petroleum supply specialist advanced individual training course at Fort Lee, Petersburg, Va. Thomas is the son of Elyce D. Thomas, and grandson of Cora M. Thomas, both of Youngstown, and is a 2001 graduate of Youngstown Woodrow Wilson High School.
PROMOTIONS
Marine corporal
Marine Corps Cpl. Roger A. Stowers, son of Annita J. Wylie and Steven W. Stowers, both of Mercer, Pa., was promoted while serving with Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 14, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station, Cherry Point, N.C. Stowers is a 1987 graduate of Mercer High School.
HONORS
Serving in Kuwait
Army Reserve Staff Sgt. Kevin L. Moyer was decorated with the Army Commendation Medal for participating in Operation Iraqi Freedom at a forward-deployed location overseas in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Moyer is a petroleum quality surveillance supervisor serving in Kuwait as a member of the 321st Theater Materiel Management Center based in Baton Rouge, La. He is normally assigned to the 363rd Quartermaster Battalion, San Marcos, Texas.
Moyer is a son of Rosemary L. Menke of Greenville, Pa., and Raymond A. Moyer of Austin, Texas, and is a 1990 graduate of Reynolds High School in Greenville.
Achievement Medal
Army Pfc. Dorothy M. Robinson was decorated with the Army Achievement Medal for distinguished service in a noncombat area. Robinson, a 1999 graduate of Farrell (Pa.) Area High School, is a unit supply specialist assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment at Fort Irwin, Calif. She is the daughter of Sheila R. Gardner of Farrell. Her husband, Billie, is the son of Billie R. and Betty D. Robinson, also of Farrell.
