Gas prices rise 11 centsin Northeast Ohio
YOUNGSTOWN -- Gas prices surged 11 cents higher this week, averaging $1.73 per gallon for self-serve regular in Northeast Ohio, up from $1.62 a week ago and compared with $1.43 a year ago.
The statewide average is $1.64 per gallon, 9 cents lower than prices in Northeast Ohio. The nationwide average is $1.65.
AAA Ohio Motorists Association, which tracks gas prices with its weekly Fuel Gauge Survey, reported the massive blackout last week set off a wave of gas price increases by temporarily shutting down gasoline refineries, fuel distribution and delivery operations across the Northeast and Midwest.
AAA also cited an improved margin for gasoline in European countries that prompted European exporters to sell more of their products at home. The United States had been importing more than a million barrels of gas from Europe earlier this summer, so the reduction on supply put additional pressure on U.S. gas prices.
