After losing its first two games, the Youngstown 14-year-old All Stars battled back in pool competition of the Babe Ruth World Series, defeating Shoreview, Minn. 2-1 Wednesday to earn a berth in the championship series.
Youngstown, one of six teams remaining, evened its pool record at 2-2 and will meet Jefferson Parish, La. today at 5:30 p.m. in the single elimination portion of the tournament in Quincy, Mass.
Corey Collins pitched a complete game against Shoreview. He allowed only two hits and struck out eight to pick up the win.
Shoreview took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but Youngstown rallied for two runs in the top of the fifth. Chuck Olesky led Youngstown with two hits and scored the deciding run as Tony Brunetti of Mooney grounded out.
Shoreview's Brandon Porten, in a losing cause, allowed five hits and both runs in 41/3 innings.
