SLIPPERY ROCK , Pa. -- A 22-year-old man drowned in Slippery Rock Creek near Frew Mill Road on Wednesday afternoon.
Shenango Township Fire Department divers found the body of Matthias Andrew Provan of Monongahela, Pa., about 4 p.m., wedged between rocks in about 18 feet of water, some 50 feet downstream from where he had entered the water, state police said.
Provan, who was not a good swimmer, began struggling immediately after entering the creek at 1:45 p.m., police said.
Rescue attempts by a 29-year-old male friend from Lawrence County, who accompanied him, and an 18-year-old passer-by were unsuccessful, police added.
Police said there is no evidence of foul play and listed the death as accidental.
Route 62 maintenancewill restrict lanes
MERCER, Pa. -- The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said there will be lane restrictions next week on U.S. Route 62 between Zahniser Road and the borough of Mercer, beginning Monday.
PennDOT crews will pave Route 62 and also do some drainage work and install guide rails. Some delays may occur.
Work is scheduled to be done Aug. 29. Motorists are encouraged to use an alternate route.
Laptop stolen from car
SALEM -- A man reported that a laptop computer was stolen from his vehicle while it was parked outside his residence, Perry Township police said.
The theft occurred on the 400 block of Old Coach Lane sometime between 11:30 p.m. Tuesday and 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, police said.
'Champions' programshares faith with inmates
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Lawrence County Jail inmates will have a "weekend of champions" Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Warden Mark Fellows said other jails have reported a significant reduction in inmate problems in the weeks after the Christian-based program. He said entertainers and athletes are brought in to talk to the inmates about their faith experiences.
Supervisors thank soldiers
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Union Township supervisors agreed Wednesday night to send a letter of appreciation to soldiers from the U.S. Army Reserve Center on Miller Avenue.
The soldiers, part of a water purification unit mobilized in December, returned home from Afghanistan Wednesday night.
Vandals damage holesat Sylvan Heights course
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Vandals caused damage to several holes at Sylvan Heights Golf Course on Ellwood Road.
Police said a golf cart was used to run over bushes used as 150-yard markers, a fruit tree and the No. 7 green sometime overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday. There also was damage done to a pay telephone and a stainless steel water fountain. Seven flag sticks are missing too, police said.
Police said the golf cart garage was broken into and it appears someone tried to remove a golf cart through a man door, but failed. Authorities speculate that the vandals found a golf cart outside or hid one on the grounds and used it to cause the damage.
Pizza deliverer robbed
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- A Four Star Pizza delivery woman was robbed at gunpoint in the 1500 block of Parke Avenue.
Police said the man took an undisclosed amount of cash and the pizza at about 9 p.m. Wednesday.
Short-change artists
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Police are looking for two short-change artists who took cash from two businesses.
Police said the men took about $20 from Jerry Stigliano's Bookstore on East State Street and about $30 from Burger King on Hermitage Road sometime between 8 and 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Police said one man was in his 50s, 6 foot 2 inches tall with gray hair, a mustache and no teeth. The other man was 6 foot 1 with short hair and in his 30s. Both men are black.
