Tax levy on ballot
Tax levy on ballot
WARREN -- Trumbull County commissioners voted Wednesday to place on the Nov. 4 ballot a measure to raise the county sales tax by a half-percent.
If approved by voters, the measure would keep the county's sales tax at 1 percent, the level it has been since commissioners imposed the increase in March.
The half-percent is expected to raise about $8 million more a year for the county.
Ozone Action Day
YOUNGSTOWN -- Today, like Wednesday, has been declared an Ozone Action Day in the Mahoning Valley because of continued warm and sunny weather, which contributes to unhealthful amounts of ground-level ozone gas.
This condition can worsen people's respiratory ailments or cause shortness of breath during outdoor activities.
The Eastgate Regional Council of Governments urges residents to reduce air pollution by carpooling and waiting until after 7 p.m. to fuel vehicles or operate gasoline-powered lawn care equipment.
Cheerleading event
NILES -- The 14th annual Extreme Cheerleading Competition will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the center court of Eastwood Mall.
More than 200 cheerleaders from area junior and senior high schools will compete in three divisions. The awards ceremony will be around 12:15 p.m.
Representatives of AmeriCheer/AmeriDance of Columbus will judge the competition. Teams are graded on execution, pyramids/stunts, degree of difficulty, projection and spirit.
