GENERATION 'NEXT'
ENRIQUE IGLESIAS
Studmuffin Latin singer and son of balladeer Julio Iglesias
Thumbnail: With tens of millions of albums sold since 1996, Enrique might be a bigger star than his father. He acquired additional wattage by hooking up with tennis star Anna Kournikova.
Sounds like Dad? Yes.
Signed on merit? More like looks.
Unsettling parent-child note: Neither father's nor son's official biography mentions the other.
Outlook: Expect him to be around a while despite charges of onstage lip-syncing and a live bootleg tape of a horribly off-key singer reputed to be Enrique.
NORAH JONES
Pop-jazz singer-pianist, daughter of Indian sitar master Ravi Shankar.
Thumbnail: Stoked by grass-roots support, Jones' 2002 debut album, "Come Away With Me," became the biggest feel-good commercial breakthrough in recent memory.
Sounds like Dad? Not in the slightest.
Signed on merit? Definitely.
Unsettling parent-child note: She took her mother's last name instead of her father's.
Outlook: She may never have a bigger record than her first, but she'll always have a career.
KELLY OSBOURNE
Rock "singer"-TV personality and daughter of Black Sabbath singer Ozzy Osbourne.
Thumbnail: Thanks to the hugely popular TV show "The Osbournes," Kelly got attention for last year's aggressively mediocre "Shut Up" album. She got even more attention for her romance and messy breakup with Bert McCracken, singer of "screamo" rock band The Used.
Sounds like Dad? Would that she did.
Signed on merit? Nooooooo.
Unsettling parent/child note: Pretty much any episode of "The Osbournes" has one.
Outlook: 14:55, 14:56, 14:57 ...
GERALD
LEVERT
R & amp;B singer and son of O'Jays singer Eddie Levert
Thumbnail: After the soul trio Levert's success, Gerald went solo and has remained a hitmaker (not to mention a fantastic live performer). He's also one-third of the supergroup LSG, with Keith Sweat and Johnny Gill, whose second album is out this week.
Sounds like Dad? Yes.
Signed on merit? Yes.
Unsettling parent-child note: Given their abilities, the Leverts' 1995 "Father and Son" collaboration was less of a triumph than it should have been.
Outlook: Solid.
JAKOB
DYLAN
Wallflowers singer-guitarist and son of guru Bob Dylan
Thumbnail: Wallflowers' 1996 album "Bringing Down the Horse" sold 4 million copies -- more than anything in Dad's catalog except his two "Greatest Hits" sets.
Sounds like Dad? No, more like Tom Petty.
Signed on merit? Yes.
Unsettling parent-child note: At the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards, Jakob invited Bruce Springsteen rather than his father to sit in with the Wallflowers.
Outlook: Iffy. The latest two Wallflowers albums have fallen short of "Horse." But Jakob can take comfort in the fact that nobody else has fully escaped his old man's shadow, either.
RUFUS
WAINWRIGHT
Singer-pianist and son of folk singers Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle
Thumbnail: He's a peerless pop craftsman with two fine albums to his credit. He has also contributed to the soundtracks for "Moulin Rouge," "Shrek" and other movies.
Sounds like Mom or Dad? His vocal timbre recalls his father.
Signed on merit? Yes.
Unsettling parent-child note: In 1975, his father recorded "Rufus Is a Tit Man," a song about the infant Rufus breast-feeding. Rufus showed he's a sport by covering his dad's "One Man Guy" on his last album.
Outlook: Good, with a third album due in September.
JEFF BUCKLEY
Late singer-songwriter and son of the late songsmith Tim Buckley
Thumbnail: Buckley was a rising star with one album to his credit when he died in 1997. If anything, he's a bigger star dead than alive.
Sounds like Dad? Eerily at times.
Signed on merit? Yes.
Unsettling parent-child note: Both Buckleys died young -- Tim of a drug overdose at age 28, Jeff by drowning at age 30.
Outlook: He probably did not record enough to live up to proclamations that he's a latter-day Nick Drake. Another posthumous live album is due out this fall.
