Firefighter's brother, 37,found dead at home
HUBBARD -- The brother of a volunteer firefighter killed in a traffic crash last month was found dead Tuesday afternoon.
William Barr, 37, was found by his mother, Lillian, in his apartment at Hubbard Manor, an assisted living facility. She lives in a separate apartment in facility.
Police Detective Robert Altier said William Barr's apartment contained several prescription bottles.
The Trumbull County Coroner's Office will determine the cause of death.
Barr's brother, Daniel, 49, a firefighter for the Hubbard Volunteer Fire Department, was killed when a pickup truck crashed into his motorcycle July 13 on Chestnut-Ridge Road in Hubbard Township.
High school classes
NILES -- High-school students will start classes next Wednesday. The building will open at 7:30 a.m., with classes starting at 7:50.
There are no early-bird classes on opening day. Homeroom lists will be posted on all doors and in the cafeteria.
Orientation for ninth-grade students at the high school is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday in the auditorium. The meeting will last about 45 minutes, and parents should plan to attend with students.

Pipe unblocked
AUSTINTOWN -- Township workers have removed paving blocks, rocks and sandstone that were blocking a drainage pipe in the Woodside Lake dam.
Residents had expressed concern that a blockage in the pipe contributed to recent flooding.
Township Administrator Michael Dockry said the debris was removed Tuesday.
Traffic enforcement
NORTH JACKSON -- The Jackson Township Police Department will conduct a stepped-up traffic enforcement campaign Monday through Aug. 31 against speeding and alcohol-related offenses and passengers failing to use seat belts.
Officers also will be watching for violations of the child safety restraints law.
Flooded residents filethousands of claims
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning County residents have filed 3,474 claims for flood damage assistance, and have received a total of $3.7 million in relief payments so far from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Walter Duzzny, director of the county emergency management agency, said 290 people have been processed at FEMA's disaster recovery center in the South Side Annex on Market Street. County residents still can apply for FEMA assistance at the center, which will remain open as needed.
Barbecue fund-raiser
YOUNGSTOWN -- Potter's House Church, Glenwood and Brentwood avenues, is sponsoring a barbecue fund-raiser at 10 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot behind the church.
Traffic, drug charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- A city police dog detected the smell of crack cocaine inside a 1984 Oldsmobile during a traffic stop on Palmer Avenue Tuesday night, reports show.
A plastic bag containing a large chunk of crack was found under the dashboard, police said.
Cobie L. Phillips, 27, of McGuffey Road was arrested on charges of drug-abuse crack, failure to comply with a police order, resisting arrest and failing to stop for a stop sign.
Shooting death
BELOIT -- Authorities are continuing to probe the shooting death of a Knox Township man.
Brett Rudolph, 43, of 3368 Westville Lake Road, was pronounced dead early Tuesday at Alliance City Hospital after he was shot at his residence.
Rudolph's girlfriend told the Columbiana County Sheriff's Department that Rudolph was handling two handguns when one of them went off. A bullet struck Rudolph in the neck.
Rudolph had been drinking, a sheriff's spokesman said this morning.
