HILLSVILLE, Pa. -- Spraying to kill adult mosquitoes will begin shortly before dusk Wednesday in Mahoning Township, said the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
Portions of the township have shown unusually large numbers of mosquitoes that can potentially carry West Nile virus, DEP officials said. The virus, a potentially fatal disease, can be transmitted to humans by mosquitoes. DEP officials said Clarke Mosquito Co. of Illinois, will spray. The chemicals used should have not have an adverse effect on humans, and they break down quickly on vegetation.
Church offering stolen
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A city man is charged with theft and receiving stolen property after being accused of taking a church collection basket. Police arrested Samuel Milone, 32, of Harrison Street Sunday after workers at St. Mary Catholic Church discovered the collection basket and two purses missing at 12:20 p.m. Sunday.
Police said workers and the priest said a man who was not a member of the parish was hanging around the rear of the church during Mass. Police said they found Milone a short time later hiding in a storm drain near Grove Street, and he was identified by the parish priest as the man inside the church. Police found $286 in Milone's possession.
Elderly man found
LEETONIA -- A search for an 85-year-old man with Alzheimer's disease ended after he was seen emerging from woods.
Harry Summers of Butcher Road, Salem Township, was reported missing about 11:47 p.m. Sunday, Columbiana County Sheriff Dave Smith said today.
A search was mounted using the sheriff's department, a rescue team, and area police and fire departments.
Summers was spotted by one of the rescuers about 3:30 p.m. Monday, after having spent the night in the woods.
He appeared unharmed, although he was taken to Salem Community Hospital for evaluation, Smith said.
Accidental shooting
BELOIT -- Authorities are investigating what appears to be the accidental shooting death of a Knox Township man.
The Columbiana County Sheriff's Department was called about 3:55 a.m. today to a Westville Lake Road home, Sheriff Dave Smith said.
The victim, whose name was unavailable this morning, was taken to Alliance Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Smith said a witness has told investigators that the man was intoxicated and was handling two handguns when one of them discharged. A bullet struck the man in the neck.
Fire department grant
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The Neshannock Township Volunteer Fire Department is getting a $22,050 federal grant to pay for fire operations and safety equipment. The money comes from the Assistance to Firefighters Program. More than 19,950 fire departments nationwide applied for grants under the program. In Pennsylvania, 1,660 fire departments applied for grants. To date, Pennsylvania has received $11,907,869.
Trial next summer
STRUTHERS -- A Boardman man will go on trial next summer on charges of reckless operation and driving under suspension after crashing his 1981 Pontiac into two parked cars and an ice machine at a city convenience store.
Police said Ifrain F. Cruz, 46, of Sheridan Road, told them he was diabetic and had not taken his insulin. The crash was about 5 p.m. Saturday. Cruz was arraigned in municipal court Monday with trial on both charges set for June 2, 2004.
Public flood meeting
GIRARD -- A public meeting will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday in city council chambers with a representative of the Federal Emergency Management Agency to discuss flood damage assistance.
