NFL ROUNDUP Training camp news, notes

Texans: Team doctors confirmed second-year fullback Jarrod Baxter will miss the season with a severe sprain in the middle of his left foot. Baxter was hurt during Friday night's 34-6 loss at Dallas.
Eagles: Rashard Cook, a backup safety and key special teams player who missed most of last season with a knee injury, signed a one-year contract Monday. Cook has spent the last four seasons with the Eagles after being claimed off waivers from Chicago before the 1999 season. He has 82 tackles -- 57 of them on special teams -- two interceptions and three sacks in his career. He has appeared in 47 games for the Eagles, including three starts.
Also, Reid met with holdout running back Duce Staley's agent for about 21/2 hours Sunday night. Staley participated by phone. Neither side would elaborate on the details of the discussion.
Broncos: Coach Mike Shanahan was given a three-year contract extension, tying him to the franchise through 2008. Team spokesman Jim Saccomano declined to discuss specifics, including salary. Shanahan, who had three years remaining on his previous deal, would be Denver's coach for 14 years if he serves out the remainder of his new contract. Shanahan guided the Broncos to back-to-back Super Bowl titles in the 1997 and 1998 seasons, but the Broncos have gone 34-30 since then with only one playoff appearance -- a first-round loss in 2000. Despite that decline, the Broncos have remained one of the NFL's best offensive teams. Last season, Denver ranked second in the AFC and third in the NFL in offense. In Shanahan's eight years as head coach, the Broncos have boasted the AFC's top-ranked offense five times.
Patriots: Cornerback Otis Smith was released Monday. Smith has been injured since last December, when he hurt his shoulder in the fourth quarter of New England's 24-7 loss to Tennessee. Smith, 37, had started in 95 of 164 games during his 13-year NFL career. He has 458 career tackles, including four sacks. He has intercepted 28 passes for 645 yards, seven returned for touchdowns.
Jets: Defensive backs DeShaun Hill, Will Hunter and Kevin Knight and kicker Danny Kight were waived, and receiver Cedric James was signed Monday. James was released by the Vikings last week after two-injury plagued seasons. In five career games, James caught one pass for 29 yards and returned 10 kickoffs for an average of 22.8 yards.
Bengals: Six players were released Monday, reducing the roster to 73. Waived were defensive tackle Mario Monds, tight end Derek Smith, fullback Terry Witherspoon, center Dustin McQuivey, linebacker Rodney Thomas and wide receiver Adam Ziesel.
Saints: Former No. 1 draft pick Ki-Jana Carter was signed Monday. Carter, drafted first by Cincinnati in 1995, was on the field for Monday's only practice and ran several plays with the offense. Carter was cut by the Packers last year.
