Man shot neighbor over flowers, cops say

ALTOONA, Pa. (AP) -- A 72-year-old man was charged with shooting his 78-year-old neighbor in the belief that the other man had poisoned his flowers, police said.
Elwood Noad Jr. was held in the Blair County Jail on attempted homicide and other charges in the Sunday shooting of his neighbor, Bud Claar, in Altoona, about 80 miles east of Pittsburgh, authorities said Monday.
Claar was listed in critical condition in an Altoona hospital after apparently suffering a heart attack, officials said.
Noad told investigators that he believed his neighbor had killed his flowers, ruining his retirement in the process, police said.
Police said Noad hid a handgun in a paper bag and walked over to his neighbor, who was kneeling on the ground repairing his lawnmower, and fired at the man, hitting him in the forearm.
Noad shot at his neighbor again as he ran to his home, police said.
A woman who answered Noad's phone Monday but declined to identify herself said he had an attorney. She refused to name the attorney or comment further to The Associated Press on Monday. Noad faces a hearing Wednesday on the charges.
