COLLEGE FOOTBALL Pitt taking its time to fill backup quarterback slot

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- University of Pittsburgh coach Walt Harris is pleased with how quarterbacks Tyler Palko and Luke Getsy have developed while battling for the backup job through one week of preseason training camp -- but he's glad they haven't been forced to play in a real game just yet.
The Panthers don't open the regular season until Sept. 6 against Kent State, so more than two weeks remain before Harris must determine whether Palko or Getsy will back up starter Rod Rutherford.
Harris is expected to take every second of that time, if not longer. In fact, the public might not find out which player is the backup until he replaces Rutherford late in that game.
"Talk to me when we get ready to play the first game," Harris said Monday at the UPMC Sports Complex.
Harris says Palko and Getsy are working hard to impress him. Both were freshmen last season, but Palko was the backup and Getsy ran the scout team.
Those roles could change this year so that Palko can redshirt, and both will have three seasons of eligibility remaining.
"They come ready to go every day, wanting to get better," Harris added. "You can sense it, that they want to get better. They have different styles and different approaches, but it's all the same results."
