NFL ROUNDUP Training camp news and notes
Jets: Middle linebacker Marvin Jones has gone through plenty of injuries throughout his career. For the first time in four seasons, Jones has to deal with another one. Jones injured his hamstring in a 22-17 loss to New Orleans on Saturday night and will miss this week's game against the New York Giants. Coach Herman Edwards did not know the extent of the injury, or how long Jones would be out. The 11-year veteran was injured while playing on special teams during a punt return in the second half. Kelvin Moses, entering his third season in the league, will start in place of Jones. Moses has no starts in his career and primarily plays special teams.
Giants: Without having taken a snap in either preseason game, Jason Garrett is moving closer to becoming the backup quarterback again because Jesse Palmer has done little. Palmer struggled Friday night in a 20-10 loss to Carolina, failing to lead the team to a first down on four second-half possessions. The offense gained 23 yards with the third-year pro at the helm.
Bears: Lance Briggs wants his play to send a message. The rookie linebacker knows the coaching staff is evaluating him and he wants to get their attention. Briggs, who has been making big hits since the team first put on pads three weeks ago, was pretty hard to miss during Saturday night's 15-10 exhibition loss to the Denver Broncos. The third-round draft choice blocked a field-goal attempt, led the Bears with 10 tackles and also had a sack.
Panthers: Linebacker Mark Fields has been diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease and will miss the entire season, the team said Sunday. Fields, 30, was hospitalized last week when a cut on his thumb became infected and didn't heal. Further tests detected Hodgkin's disease Thursday and he began chemotherapy Saturday.
