Cat kills pet birds
NILES -- A Mason Street woman told police a neighborhood cat came in through a basement window around 10 a.m. Friday and killed and ate her two pet cockatiels.
Cruiser is in accident
GIRARD -- The city is down one cruiser after a two-car accident.
Police said Capt. John Villecco was in the 1996 Chevy Caprice cruiser at State Street and Broadway Avenue around 2 p.m. Sunday when a Warren woman ran a red light and her vehicle collided with his, damaging a headlight and the passenger-side door.
Amber Cluckey, 24, of Atlantic Street, was cited for red light violation. Her car had front-end damage.
Weathersfield schools
MINERAL RIDGE -- Weathersfield Local Schools will open for pupils next Monday. A parent-student orientation meeting for kindergarten will be in Seaborn Elementary's all-purpose room that day at 9:30 a.m. Kindergarten pupils begin classes Aug. 26. Parents of new pupils who missed registration need to register immediately at the school building their child will be attending. Parents need to bring the child's birth certificate, immunization records, social security number, proof of residency, and legal proof of custody, if applicable.
Seeking quilts
BRISTOLVILLE -- The bicentennial committee is seeking quilts to display in a show at the Bristol United Methodist Church during Heritage Days Sept. 13.

Tire collection
HOWLAND -- The township public works department will collect scrap tires at curbside Saturday.
Tires should be put by the curb by 8 a.m. Up to eight passenger tires, with rims removed, will be picked up from each house.
Clown training
WARREN -- The SCOPE Senior Center is offering a one-day clown training session at 2 p.m. next Monday.
The class is free, but space is limited.
Instruction will be given in makeup, wigs and costumes.
The class will be presented by a professional clown who was trained at the Ringling Brothers camp in Florida.
The class is open to people of all ages, but first choice will be given to senior citizens if the class if full.
Lakeview schools
CORTLAND -- Orientation for pupils new to the Lakeview School District will be Tuesday and Wednesday.
Eighth-graders are to meet at 8 a.m. Tuesday and those in grades nine through 12 meet at 1 p.m., both in the high school cafeteria.
New elementary and middle-school pupils will meet Wednesday. Grade-schoolers meet at 10 a.m. in their respective buildings, and fifth-graders and middle-schoolers meet in the middle-school cafeteria at 1:30 p.m.
The first day of school is next Monday.
West Nile virus in Pa.
MERCER, Pa. -- The first sign of West Nile virus in Mercer County was found in a sample of mosquitoes collected in Pine Township, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
The mosquito pool tested positive Thursday. It was one of 117 mosquito pools tested so far this year.
Residents are reminded to remove all standing water. Standing water serves as a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
Mosquitoes can transmit West Nile virus to humans and birds.
Stolen pickup found
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 2000 Chevrolet S-10 pickup stolen Aug. 12 in New Castle, Pa., was recovered about 2:30 a.m. today on West Hylda Avenue, and the driver was taken into custody. Zeon Alvarado, 31, of New Castle was arrested on a charge of receiving stolen property.
The truck was towed with a hold on it for Pennsylvania State Police.
City police were sent to the 500 block of Hylda to check out a report of a fight and spotted the pickup in the driveway.
Fireworks citation
YOUNGSTOWN -- Austintown Township police saw someone lighting fireworks in the parking lot of Sparkle Market on South Meridian Road and called city police about 1 a.m. Sunday. John Libbey, 42, of South Schenley Avenue, an employee of B.J. Alan Fireworks, was issued a citation charging him with illegal discharge of fireworks. Libbey told police that he discharged a "cracker bomb."
