AROUND THE HORN Sunday's other games

AMERICAN LEAGUE
Mariners 3, Red Sox 1
SEATTLE -- Freddy Garcia won his second straight start after dropping six consecutive decisions. Trot Nixon hit his 23rd homer of the season, a 412-foot shot to center, in the third inning before Garcia (11-12) settled down and retired 17 in a row before walking Nixon with two outs in the eighth. Garcia pitched 72/3 innings and gave up one run on four hits and two walks, with a season-high eight strikeouts. The Mariners scored three runs on four hits off John Burkett (9-7) in the fourth.
Yankees 8, Orioles 0
BALTIMORE -- Mike Mussina pitched a three-hitter to win his fourth straight decision, and New York completed a four-game sweep. Karim Garcia homered and drove in three runs, and Derek Jeter had three hits for the Yankees, who have won 14 of their last 16 games against Baltimore.
Royals 5, Twins 4
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Raul Ibanez and Joe Randa hit consecutive home runs in a four-run third inning as Kansas City avoided a three-game sweep. Angels 11, Tigers 6
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Garret Anderson became the Angels' career hits leader and threw out the potential tying run at the plate. Anderson was 3-for-5, including a two-run double, increasing his career hits total to 1,591. He preserved a 4-3 lead for Ramon Ortiz (14-10) in the fifth when he charged a one-out single by Dmitri Young and made a one-hop throw to the plate that just beat a sliding Warren Morris.
Athletics 7, Blue Jays 3
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Terrence Long drove in three runs, and Oakland roughed up Roy Halladay. Barry Zito pitched seven innings, winning his second start in a row following a career-worst five-game losing streak. Halladay (16-5), trying to become the AL's first 17-game winner, lasted a season-low three innings.
Rangers 6, White Sox 4
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Alex Rodriguez hit his 33rd homer and a tie-breaking two-run triple in the seventh inning as Texas completed a three-game sweep. With the score tied at 4, Rodriguez hit a sinking liner to center field off Damaso Marte (4-2) that got past a diving Carl Everett and rolled to the warning track as two runners scored.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Diamondbacks 2, Braves 0
ATLANTA -- Curt Schilling pitched one-hit ball for eight innings and struck out 12 in a classic duel with Greg Maddux. Alex Cintron broke up a scoreless game with a home run in the seventh. Cintron scored an insurance run in the ninth, when he doubled against Kent Mercker and came home on an RBI single by Rod Barajas. Marcus Giles had the only hit off Schilling, a double in the first.
Expos 4, Giants 2
MONTREAL -- Brad Wilkerson hit his second grand slam of the season with two outs in the ninth inning. Wilkerson drove Tim Worrell's 3-2 pitch over the center-field wall for Montreal's sixth game-ending homer this season, spoiling Sidney Ponson's best start for the Giants. Ponson (0-3) breezed through the first eight innings in his third start for San Francisco and came within two outs of his first NL win, complete game and shutout. But he was removed after loading the bases in the ninth.
Dodgers 3, Cubs 0
CHICAGO -- Hideo Nomo scattered four hits over seven innings and Eric Gagne saved his 41st straight game this season. Gagne's streak is the longest to start a season in major league history. Gagne also extended his scoreless streak to 21 innings, the longest by a Dodgers pitcher this season. Nomo (14-9) is 5-1 over his last seven starts.
Reds 4, Astros 3
CINCINNATI -- Dernell Stenson hit a solo homer, and Juan Castro had a three-run shot for Cincinnati. Jeff Bagwell hit a solo homer for the Astros, who finished a costly road trip. They went 2-5 in Chicago and Cincinnati, bringing them back to the pack in the NL Central.
Marlins 11, Padres 7
MIAMI -- Josh Beckett allowed two runs in a career-best eight innings, and Derrek Lee homered for Florida. Ivan Rodriguez and Luis Castillo had two RBIs apiece for the Marlins. Beckett (6-6) allowed five hits, two walks and struck out eight, sending San Diego to its fifth straight loss.
Mets 6, Rockies 4
NEW YORK -- Cliff Floyd had four hits and is 10-for-11 in three games since deciding to have season-ending surgery on his aching Achilles' tendon at the end of the month. Al Leiter (12-6) allowed four hits and one run while striking out 10, the most by a Mets pitcher this season. David Weathers got one out for his fourth save.
Phillies 6, Cardinals 4
PHILADELPHIA -- Amaury Telemaco won for the first time in over two years, retiring the final 14 batters he faced as Philadelphia completed a three-game sweep. Jim Thome and Pat Burrell each hit a two-run homer in the third inning. Albert Pujols, owner of a 30-game hitting streak, sat out with flu-like symptoms for the Cardinals, who have lost four of their last five.
