YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown State football team will hold a kicking scrimmage Monday at 6:30 p.m. at Stambaugh Stadium.
The Penguins, who practice twice on Monday, will also hold A rehearsal scrimmage at 2 p.m. Wednesday. After a day off Thursday the Penguins will practice Friday at 9 p.m. following the high school game at the stadium.
Drills begin Saturday for the season opener Aug. 28 against Edinboro University at 7:30 p.m. at Stambaugh.

Dennis Malaskafires no-hitter
STRUTHERS -- Dennis Malaska fired a no-hitter as Girard blanked Hubbard 10-0 in the Oldtimers baseball tournament Saturday at Cene Park.
Malaska, father of Mark Malaska the Tampa Bay Devil Rays relief pitcher, struck out two and walked three. He also had two of Girard's 16 hits.
In other contests, Poland, despite nine errors, topped Jamestown, N.Y., 14-10; Alliance edged Salem 6-5, and Jamestown defeated Massillon 2-1.
Mooney topsHudson in scrimmage
HUDSON -- Junior Kiki Willis scored an 8-yard yard goal off an assist from freshman Alecko Frangopoulos in the final minutes as the Cardinal Mooney High School boys soccer team defeated Hudson 1-0 in the Hudson Invitational scrimmage Saturday.
Hudson is the defending Div. I state champion and Mooney won the Div. II state title last fall.
Willis scored an 18-yard goal as Mooney beat Green 1-0 then he scored on kicks of 20 and 25 yards to give Mooney a 2-0 win over Walsh Jesuit.
Mooney freshman goalie Jason Franko faced just three shots in the three games.
Hudson was ranked No. 1 in the country last season by USA Today.
Three men inU.S. Amateur
OAKMONT, Pa. -- Three area men will compete in the U.S. Amateur Championship starting Monday at Oakmont Country Club.
Jon Smarrelli of New Castle, Pa.; Justin Wilson of Ellsworth, and Jason Kokrak, Warren will compete.
Haefke in first
FAIRLAWN -- Teri Haefke of Austintown led the Akron Women's Northeast Regional Open after 16 games at Riviera Lanes Saturday.
Haefke had a pinfall of 3,795 in the fifth annual event, which is sponsored by the Professional Women's Bowling Association.
Defending champion Jackie Mitskavich was 94 pins behind Haefke, the Austintown Fitch High girls bowling coach.
Local women missing the cut of the top 16 were Austintown's Jennifer Mellott (18th, 3,321); Alliance's Nancy Scott (21st, 3,250); Austintown's Sue Mineo (22nd, 3,247); Youngstown's Charlesetta McKinley (31st, 3,103) and Boardman's Nancy Fairchild (41st, 2,777).
Correction
SALEM -- Don Conser is still the head volleyball coach at Salem High. A story in Thursday's paper incorrectly reported that he had retired from coaching volleyball. Conser did retire from teaching and coaching softball.

California teamis Pony champ
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- David Ross scored in the second inning and hit an RBI single in the third as California's Heartwell-Lakewood beat Humacao of Puerto Rico 4-3 Saturday in the Pony League World Series championship game.
Travis Darnaud and Travis Costin each doubled for Heartwell-Lakewood.
Humacao was forced to finish a game against the Bronx, New York, earlier in the day because their Friday game was suspended in the fourth inning by rain. Humacao beat the Bronx team 13-2.
Adalberto Alvira hit a solo homer in the championship game for Humacao in the second inning.
Thousands pay final respects to Brooks
ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Herb Brooks was not afraid to speak his mind to anyone, former U.S. Olympic team captain Mike Eruzione told more than 2,000 people who gathered to mourn the hockey coach.
"Right now, he's saying to God: 'I don't like the style of your team. We should change it,' " Eruzione said, drawing laughter from the crowd.
About 2,500 paid their final respects to Brooks, the man best known for coaching the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team dubbed "The Miracle on Ice." Brooks was killed Monday in a car accident just north of the Twin Cities.
Colts lose Thompson
INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis Colts fullback Donnel Thompson will miss this season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.
Thompson was injured Friday night while covering a punt early in the second quarter of Indianapolis' 21-7 preseason win over Seattle.
Smith suspendedfor four games
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Receiver Jimmy Smith of the Jacksonville Jaguars was suspended for four games by the NFL on Saturday for violating the league's substance abuse policy.
Details of Smith's violation are confidential.
The leading receiver in team history was found to have cocaine in his system after being pulled over on suspicion of drunk driving in 2001. He denied he used cocaine and was never charged.
Roddick in final
MASON -- Seventh-seeded Andy Roddick scored the final six points to win the tie-breaker in the first set and then beat Max Mirnyi 6-4 in the second set on Saturday to advance to the final of the Cincinnati Masters.
Serving at 5-1 in the tiebreaker, Mirnyi was beat on a passing shot as he rushed the net. Roddick won his two serves to trail 5-4, broke Mirnyi twice and served to win the final point and the set 7-6 (5).
Roddick will play unseeded Mardy Fish, who advanced to today's championship by beating No. 8 seed Rainer Schuettler 7-6 (4), 7-6 (6).
Russian teento play for title
TORONTO -- Russian teenager Lina Krasnoroutskaya reached her first final at a top-tier WTA Tour event by beating Paola Suarez 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 on Saturday in the Rogers AT & amp;T Cup.
Justine Henin-Hardenne, the tournament's No. 2 seed, broke up a possible all-Russian final by beating ninth-seeded Elena Dementieva 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-2.
