TROY, N.Y. Scrappers claw past ValleyCats

TROY, N.Y. -- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers bundled three walks and a single into a 12th-inning run as they defeated the Tri-City ValleyCats 4-3 Saturday. The Scrappers (28-31) led 2-1 after five innings and 3-2 heading into the last of the ninth in the New York-Penn League game.
The ValleyCats (32-26) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Wade Robinson homered to right.
It was about the only mistake by Mahoning Valley starter Juan Lara, who allowed just three hits and no walks in six innings. Mike Conroy hit his fifth homer of the season to right field for the Scrappers, knotting the game in the fourth. With two away in the fifth inning, Jonathan Van Every hit his first homer for the Scrappers this year to make it 2-1.
In the eighth inning the ValleyCats got a double from Brock Koman to score Josh Anderson and tie the game. Koman leads the NYPL with 23 doubles. Brad Snyder led off the ninth for the Scrappers with a single and he stole second, his 13th theft of the year. Kevin Kouzmanoff singled in Snyder to make it 3-2, but Tri-City scored again to force extra innings.
In the 12th, Van Every led off with a walk and went to third on a single by Snyder. Conroy walked to load the bases and Ryan Goleski was walked to bring in Van Every with the winning run. Mark Harris got the first two ValleyCats to ground out in the last of the 12th but then allowed a double to Koman and a single to Beau Hearod. Dan Rich replaced Harris and struck out the only man he faced to earn the save.
