Stolen pickup recovered
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 2000 Chevrolet S-10 pickup stolen Aug. 12 in New Castle, Pa., was recovered about 2:30 a.m. today on West Hylda Avenue and the driver was taken into custody.
Zeon Alvarado, 31, of New Castle was arrested on a charge of receiving stolen property.
The truck was towed with a hold on it for Pennsylvania State Police. Police were sent to the 500 block of Hylda to check out a report of a fight and, when they arrived, spotted the pickup in the driveway of a home there.
Fireworks set off in lot
YOUNGSTOWN -- Austintown police saw someone lighting fireworks in the parking lot of Sparkle Market on South Meridian Road and called city police about 1 a.m. Sunday.
John Libbey, 42, of South Schenley Avenue, an employee of B.J. Alan Fireworks, was issued a citation charging him with illegal discharge of fireworks. Libbey told police that he discharged a "cracker bomb" in the parking lot, reports show.
Underage-drinking charge
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police went in to Mickey's Bar, 2800 Market St., at 1:30 a.m. Sunday and checked the identification of a young-looking woman with a bottle of beer.
Dana M. Reed, 18, of Laurie Drive was issued a citation charging her with underage drinking. The beer was taken as evidence.
Salem emergency levy
SALEM -- Voters will be asked in the November general election to adopt a 7.85-mill emergency levy to aid the city school district's struggling financial situation.
The school board agreed recently to put the new five-year measure on the ballot.
The levy would raise about $2.3 million annually and help the district avoid going into the red, officials say.
Cruiser is in accident
GIRARD -- The city is down one cruiser after a two-car accident.
Police said Capt. John Villecco was in the 1996 Chevy Caprice cruiser at State Street and Broadway Avenue around 2 p.m. Sunday when a Warren woman ran a red light and her vehicle collided with his, damaging a headlight and the passenger-side door.
Amber Cluckey, 24, of Atlantic Street was cited for red-light violation. Her car had front-end damage.
Weathersfield schools
MINERAL RIDGE -- Weathersfield Local Schools will open for pupils next Monday.
A parent-pupil orientation meeting for kindergarten will be in Seaborn Elementary's all-purpose room that day at 9:30 a.m.
Kindergarten pupils begin classes Aug. 26.
Parents of new pupils who missed registration need to register immediately at the school building their child will be attending.
Parents need to bring the child's birth certificate, immunization records, Social Security number, proof of residency and legal proof of custody, if applicable.
West Nile virus in Pa.
MERCER, Pa. -- The first sign of West Nile virus in Mercer County was found in a sample of mosquitoes collected in Pine Township, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
The mosquito pool tested positive Thursday. It was one of 117 mosquito pools tested this year.
Residents are reminded to remove all standing water, which serves as a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
Mosquitoes can transmit West Nile virus to humans and birds.
Attempted robbery
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A man wearing a mask identical to the one in the movie "Scream" apparently wasn't scary enough.
Shenango police said the man attempted to rob the Red Apple Quick Fill on Butler Road, but the clerk refused to hand over the cash. He ran off heading east at about 11 p.m. Saturday.
Police described him as being dark-skinned and wearing a green army jacket, black hood, dark pants and the mask.
Clown training
WARREN -- The SCOPE Senior Center is offering a one-day clown training session at 2 p.m. next Monday.
The class is free, but space is limited.
Instruction will be given in makeup, wigs and costumes.
The class will be presented by a professional clown who was trained at the Ringling Brothers camp in Florida.
The class is open to people of all ages, but first choice will be given to senior citizens if the class is full.
