Symphony European tour
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Negotiators extended the contract for musicians in the Pittsburgh Symphony to allow for the company's European Festival Tour scheduled to begin Saturday. The contract was to expire on Aug. 31, the final day of the tour. The new contract expiration date is Sept. 21. The symphony, facing an $800,000 shortfall this season, needs to cut $2.5 million from next season's budget. The symphony board earlier this year opened negotiations on a new contract by proposing to cut musicians' pay, now $90,220 a year, by $10,000. That proposal has been rejected by the musicians, who hope to strike a new deal before their five-year contract expires.
Transit authority helps
ERIE, Pa. (AP) -- The Erie Metropolitan Transit Authority came to the aid of firefighters battling a blaze in full gear as temperatures hovered at about 90 degrees in northwest Pennsylvania. The authority sent an air-conditioned bus to the city's Seventh Street neighborhood to give firefighters relief from the oppressive humidity that blanketed the area Friday. The four people in the house escaped without injury. Firefighters struggled in the heat to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent structures.
