NFL PRESEASON ROUNDUP | Saturday's other games

Ravens 13, Falcons 10
ATLANTA -- Atlanta star Michael Vick fractured his right fibula Saturday night in an exhibition loss to Baltimore, and Falcons owner Arthur Blank said the quarterback will be sidelined at least six weeks. The Ravens (1-1) held off Atlanta despite a 67-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Falcons rookie Bryan Scott with 1:51 left. After Atlanta recovered an onside kick, third-string quarterback Kurt Kittner threw an interception, sealing the Falcons' second loss in two games. Baltimore rookie Kyle Boller, battling Chris Redman and Anthony Wright for the starting quarterback job, threw a 1-yard TD pass to Terry Jones Jr. in the third quarter, and Matt Stover added two field goals. Blank said Vick wouldn't have surgery. If Vick's out six weeks, he'll miss the first four games of the regular season, and would return Oct. 5 against Minnesota. "This team will have to pull together, and we'll all have to play at a little higher level than they were going to before," Blank said. "But they have the capacity to do that." Philadelphia quarterback Donovan McNabb had a similar injury last year and was out two months. "I am terribly disappointed," Vick said in a statement. "But this is the ultimate team sport and we will have to keep playing. I have confidence that these guys and coaches can get it done." It was the first-ever matchup of Vick and Baltimore linebacker Ray Lewis, one of the top defensive players in the league, but Lewis never got a chance to tackle Vick before the injury. On third-and-6 from the Atlanta 5 late in the first quarter, Vick was chased out of the pocket and was tackled by Adalius Thomas. Vick fell awkwardly on his right leg and grabbed it even before he hit the ground. "That hurts our league and the Falcons, and I feel for him," Lewis said. "He's my friend, and he'll be back. I'll call him and give him encouragement." Vick finished 0-for-4, and rushed for 8 yards. Last season, Vick made the Pro Bowl in his first full season as a starter and set three NFL records for rushing by a quarterback. Doug Johnson, who becomes the starting quarter in Vick's absence, completed 6 of 11 passes for 76 yards, including a 42-yarder to MarTay Jenkins. Last year, when Vick missed a game against the New York Giants, Johnson filled in and led the Falcons to a 17-10 victory, starting an eight-game unbeaten streak. "Obviously, Mike is a critical part of this team, but the players have a tremendous amount of confidence in Doug Johnson, and Mike does, too," Blank said.
Bengals 23, Lions 10
CINCINNATI -- Marvin Lewis and Carson Palmer made good first impressions on a cynical city. Palmer opened the second half with two impressive touchdown drives, completing all seven of his throws, as the Cincinnati Bengals pulled away in front of a small crowd. The Bengals (1-1) wanted to look good in their first home game under Lewis, a first-year coach trying to persuade fans of the NFL's worst team that better times are ahead. "It wasn't perfect, but we did what we said we wanted, which was to improve from last week," Lewis said. "We're getting better." The Bengals sold only 39,956 tickets -- the fewest for any preseason game since Paul Brown Stadium opened in 2000, and a measure of how much work Lewis has ahead to win back fans. After a first half that produced few big plays and only four field goals, Palmer took over and brought the crowd to its feet by completing all seven of his passes against Lions backups in the third quarter. His 2-yard toss to fourth-round pick Jeremi Johnson on 4th-and-goal put the Bengals up 16-3 and showed that their quarterback of the future is getting closer each time out. The Heisman Trophy winner lofted a 30-yard touchdown pass to T.J. Houshmandzadeh on the next drive, leaving him 7-for-7 for 97 yards -- impressive statistics for a rookie limited to one practice last week because of a strained tendon in his right foot. Joey Harrington played four series and led the Lions to only two first downs. Jon Kitna, who will start the Bengals' season at quarterback, was 10-of-15 for 90 yards.
Saints 22, Jets 17
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Deuce McAllister played his first game of the preseason, and New Orleans' reserves led the Saints past the New York Jets. Todd Bouman guided two scoring drives and the Saints scored three second-half touchdowns. McAllister played the first half after sitting out the opener against Philadelphia. He finished with 11 carries for 45 yards -- including a nice 17-yard run in the second quarter through the middle of the Jets' defense. He also had three receptions for 14 yards. But the Saints (1-1) trailed 7-3 at halftime after Chad Pennington threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Curtis Conway with 28 seconds left. "I felt a little rust but I felt good," McAllister said.
Patriots 20, Redskins 13
LANDOVER, Md. -- Rookie Bethel Johnson fumbled three times -- that's right, three times -- on one kickoff return. He returned the next one 98 yards for a touchdown. The second-round draft pick from Texas A & amp;M was the typical exhibition game goat-to-hero. For those looking for a barometer of the regular season, the Patriots were ahead 13-7 when the starters sat down at halftime. New England's starting defense, except for a couple of long passes to Laveranues Coles, looked in solid form for the second straight week. Then again, that wasn't hard to do against the mistake-prone Redskins. Dropped passes, an errant shotgun snap by backup center Wilbert Brown, and Patrick Ramsey's under-pressure intercepted pass made the first quarter look like a bad rerun of last week's embarrassing 20-0 loss at Carolina.
Titans 37, Bills 24
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Titans gave Bills coach Gregg Williams a glimpse of what he's been missing in Buffalo. Eddie George ran for a touchdown, Steve McNair threw for another and the Titans came up with four sacks and three turnovers. The Bills (1-1) had a tough time finding any semblance of rhythm against the Titans, who had both Kevin Carter and Jevon Kearse on the field healthy, something that happened for just two plays last season because of Kearse's broken foot. Drew Bledsoe was sacked once and hit repeatedly as he completed just five of 11 passes for 47 yards. Travis Henry ran three times for 69 yards, but 62 came on one run in the second quarter against a mix of the first- and second-team defense. The Titans (2-0) led 21-0 before the Bills finally scored and had little problem with a Buffalo defense retooled during the offseason after ranking 27th in points allowed last year.
Broncos 15, Bears 10
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Jarious Jackson connected with Frank Rice on a 36-yard fourth-down pass before sneaking in for a touchdown with 18 seconds left for Denver. Jackson drove the Broncos 80 yards on 15 plays in the final three minutes. The big play was his fourth-down pass to Rice that carried to the Chicago 15. Reuben Droghns carried 14 yards to the 1 before Jackson -- the Broncos' third quarterback of the night -- carried it in for Denver's victory. The Bears took a 10-3 lead in the third quarter, but couldn't hold on.
Chiefs 26, Vikings 16
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Trent Green threw a 59-yard scoring pass to Marc Boerigter for Kansas City's first touchdown of the preseason. Todd Collins also threw a TD pass for Kansas City (2-1), and Morten Andersen kicked three field goals and Jose Cortez made one. The Vikings (0-2) got a 1-yard TD run in the first quarter from rookie Onterrio Smith, who was drafted in the fourth round and is competing with Doug Chapman to be the featured running back. The Chiefs, who led the NFL in scoring last year but had failed to get a touchdown in their first two exhibition games, finally broke the drought when Boerigter got loose with 8:38 left in the second quarter. The Canadian Football League veteran, in his second year in the NFL, caught the ball between three defenders at about the 35 and sped untouched into the end zone.
