BOARDMAN -- Township residents hit hardest by flooding over the past several weeks will be getting a little help from trustees.
The township will pay for extra trash pickups next week for flood-damaged items. The township will also distribute lime to line the yards at residences that were flooded.
Road superintendent Gary Dawson said the lime will act as a disinfectant for those who pumped floodwater out of their basements and into the yard.
He said the board of health recommended laying the lime. Several residents said they were afraid to allow their children to play in their yards.
"Our people have suffered tremendously and we have to find a way to help them out," said Trustee Tom Costello.
"Government does limit what I can do, but I am going to do everything I can legally do."
Trash pickup
Trash will be picked up from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday next week. Dawson said officials hope to collect flooded items from every street by the end of the week.
Residents can pick up 50-pound bags of lime at the township road department between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Dawson said there is no limit to the number of bags residents can have, but the average person will need between two and four bags.
Proof of residency will be required to get the lime.
There will also be a public forum at 6 p.m. Monday in Center Middle School to address the flooding and plans for similar situations.
Costello said local, county and state officials have been invited to attend.
