SWIMMING Firestone Area team wins Youngstown league title



Several swimmers set two individual championship meet records.
For the first time in its history, the Firestone Area Swim Team (FAST) won the Youngstown Swim League Championships, held at Youngstown State.
Based in Columbiana, FAST scored 1,258 points, out-distancing runner-up Canfield, which scored 1,141.5 points.
Third place went to Boardman (1,004.5), followed by Applewood (832), Poland (624.5) and Warren Olympic (512).
FAST had the most points overall and won the large team (100 or more swimmers) division, while Warren Olympic won the small team division.
Achieved goal
"Our kids came to the championships with one goal in mind, and they swam their hearts out to reach that goal," said FAST coach Erin Parker.
Many league championship meet records were set. FAST's 8 and under girls set a medley record of 1 minute, 22.68 seconds, while Canfield's 8 and under boys did likewise (1:22.47). Canfield's 9-10 girls medley relay (1:08.47), Logan's 11-12 boys medley relay (2:14.68) and FAST's 9-10 girls 100-yard freestyle relay (59.77) also set records.
Several swimmers set two individual championship meet records: Dana Shaker (Logan girls 9-10), 25 freestyle (12.63) and 25 backstroke (15.06); Megan Linnelli (Canfield girls 15-18), 50 free (24.27) and 50 breaststroke (31.08); Tyler O'Halloran (Boardman boys 15-18), 100 free (45.94) and 50 breast (26.00); and Nathan King (Logan boys 15-18), 50 backstroke (24.51) and 50 butterfly (23.87).
Other record-breakers were Carey Venglarcik (FAST girls 15-18), 29.07 in the 50 back; Gia Velasquez (Canfield girls 9-10), 16.61 in the 25 breast; Michael Fredericka (Warren Olympic boys 9-10) , 16.15 in the 50 breast, and Morgan McCarty (Logan girls 11-12), 34.45 in the 50 breast.
