Sporting clays shootplanned at preserve
The Trumbull County Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs, Whitetails Unlimited, Ducks Unlimited, and the National Wild Turkey Federation will host the seventh annual Sporting Clays Shoot Aug. 24.
Shooting starts at 9 a.m. at Grand Valley Hunting Preserve, Penniman Road two miles north of state Route 88 in North Bloomfield.
This shoot is a fundraiser for the education and conservation funds of the organizations and a pre-opening to the fall hunting season. There will be a variety of contest such as the Puff Target, and the Lewis Class events which will be tied to cash prize awards. There will also be a variety of prize raffles and contests.
Dinner will be available for $5.
There will be a "Top Gun" trophy for Trumbull Federation Clubs awarded based on the best five scores of shooters competing for each club. There will also be other awards according to shooters in attendance.

EDUCATION
Hunting clinic planned
Portage-Summit Field and Stream will hold two hunting clinics for the coming Ohio hunting season.
Saturday at 10 a.m. the club will host a fall waterfowl clinic for beginning duck and goose hunters and those interested in waterfowl hunting.
Ohio's early goose and teal seasons opens Sept. 1, and the clinic will give participants the opportunity to do a last-minute check-list of their waterfowl hunting gear.
On Sept. 13, the club will host a fall deer hunting clinic geared to beginning and junior deer hunters.
Ohio deer season begins Oct. 4 with the fall archery season. The gun hunting season will be the Monday following Thanksgiving.
The deer clinic will begin at 9 a.m. and will include range sight-in of guns following lunch.
Advanced registration is requested for both clinics to gauge lunch needs. Both clinics are free and open to all interested hunters.

PENNSYLVANIA
Waterways conservation officer training offered
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission is looking for individuals interested in a career as a waterways conservation officer. Applications for a qualifying examination for the position of WCO Trainee will be accepted through Sept. 26.
WCOs perform specialized work in fisheries conservation and watercraft safety under the jurisdiction of the PFBC, blending law enforcement and public relations skills. Officers work long hours, including holidays and weekends.
Applicants must be at least 21 at date of hire and possess a current valid drivers license. Successful candidates must pass written, oral and physical evaluations among other qualifications.

2004 Lake Erie walleye changes are approved
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission recently took action to raise the minimum size limit for walleye harvested by Lake Erie anglers to 18 inches, with a four-fish maximum daily creel limit, beginning Jan. 1, 2004. The harvest season will remain as the first Saturday in May to March 15 of the following year.
The PFBC anticipates that new walleye regulations will remain in place on Lake Erie for at least five years.
HUNTING
Early goose season
An early season for the Canada goose will be held at Shenango Lake in Pennsylvania Sept. 1-25, excluding Sundays.
Hunting will be allowed on all project lands and waters but prohibited within the Clark Recreation Area, R.C.'s Marina, Shenango Recreation area campground, closed YMCA Campground and the Bayview ORV area.
Waterfowl blinds issued
Permits to build waterfowl blinds for hunting at Shenango Lake will be issued from Sept. 14 through 17, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.
The permits will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis with a limited number of blinds available. Only one permit will be issued per household.
Permits are available at the project office, near the dam at 2442 Kelley Road, Hermitage, Pa.
