Mill Creek teamplaces second
ALLIANCE -- Two five-person teams representing Willandale Golf Club and East Liverpool Country Club qualified on Monday for the 2003 Buick Scramble National Championships at Grande Lakes Resort in Orlando, Fla., Oct. 8-12.
Taking place at Alliance Country Club, 24 teams from throughout Northern Ohio competed in the Northern Ohio PGA Sectional Championship, each including one PGA Professional and four amateurs.
In the gross division, PGA Professional Jeff Willis' Willandale GC of Sugarcreek recorded a 16-under-par 56 to take the gross division championship by two shots.
Ted Cahill's Fox Meadows CC of Medina finished in second place with a 58.
In the net division, PGA Professional Dick Schwartz's East Liverpool CC of East Liverpool survived a three-team sudden-death playoff over Mill Creek GC and Pine Hills CC in capturing the net division championship. All three teams turned in a net 17-under-par 55 during tournament regulation.
Andy Santor was the pro for Mill Creek Golf Course.
Cockroft to speak
AUSTINTOWN -- Former Cleveland Browns place kicker and punter Don Cockroft will speak on behalf of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Chapter's in the Austintown Library on Aug. 21 at noon.
Cockroft, who played 14 seasons with the Browns, will discuss character and integrity.

Widow pleads guilty
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Sobbing and apologizing to the family of NFL running back Fred Lane, Deidra Lane pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter for gunning her husband down as he walked through the front door of their home.
Roddick advances
MASON -- Andy Roddick fought off unseeded James Blake to advance to the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Masters.
The two traded power serves and precise returns before the seventh-seeded Roddick wore down Blake for a 7-6 (2), 6-2 victory.
Purdue back out
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue running back Joey Harris was ruled academically ineligible for his senior season.
Harris, the Boilermakers' leading rusher with more than 1,100 yards last season, needed to average a B in three summer school classes to remain eligible.

Paraglider missing
APPENZELL, Switzerland -- Former U.S. national paragliding champion Scotty Marion is missing in the Swiss Alps after taking part in a long distance competition.
Marion, from Salt Lake City, disappeared Aug. 8 after taking off from a launch site in Appenzell, in the eastern part of Switzerland, for a flight that was supposed to last several hours.
