JOHNSTON, PA. Aging stadium to be updated with state funds
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (AP) -- The Johnstown City Council could spend up to $7.5 million to add new seating, install artificial turf and make other renovations at the aging Point Stadium.
The council Wednesday approved a plan designed by Johnstown-based Pawlowski/Haman Architects that would create a deeper left field wall and build a second deck behind home plate.
The design would keep aspects of a $6 million renovation that was completed about a decade ago, but would completely change the feel of the historic Stadium, said architect Jeffrey Haman.
Council members liked that the city doesn't have to spend the entire $7.5 million to fix the ballpark, just whatever money the city has on hand, said councilman Adam Henger.
Last spring, Gov. Ed Rendell delivered $2 million in state funds to renovate the 77-year-old stadium.
The grandstands of Point Stadium are rusting away, crumbling brick walls are covered by boards and the minor league team that played in the stadium was sold last year.
The hulking structure was the site of Negro League Games in 1945 featuring players such as Satchel Paige and Jackie Robinson. Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig also played at the park.
