Suspected West Nile death
COLUMBUS -- A 77-year-old Franklin County man died Monday of complications related to probable West Nile virus.
With the addition of a probable case in a 33-year-old woman from Lorain County, his is the ninth case of human WNV reported in Ohio in 2003, and the first death, according to the Ohio Department of Health.
There were three reported cases at this time last year. The first WNV death of 2002 occurred Aug. 12.
ODH Director Dr. J. Nick Baird said WNV is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito, not infected birds or people. He said less than 1 percent of mosquitoes carry the virus and less than 1 percent of people bitten by infected mosquitoes will become severely ill.
Those older than 50 and those with other health problems are most at risk for complications such as encephalitis, inflammation of the brain, or meningitis, inflammation of the covering of the brain and spinal cord.
