SCRAPPERS N. Jersey scores early in 5-3 win



The Cardinals scored all their runs in the first inning.
AUGUSTA, N.J. -- The New Jersey Cardinals did all their scoring in the first inning and went on to defeat the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, 5-3, Wednesday in a New York-Penn League game at Skylands Park.
The Scrappers (26-30) have dropped two straight New York-Penn League games to the Cardinals (22-33).
After trailing 5-0 in the first inning, the Scrappers scored three times in the top of the fourth inning.
Ryan Mulhern, who collected two of the six Mahoning Valley hits, reached on an error.
Mike Conroy singled to right and Ryan Garko reached on an error.
Jonathan Van Every doubled in a run to make it 5-2 and after a ground out, Anthony Lunetta drove in Garko with a sacrifice fly.
The top three hitters in the Scrappers lineup were a combined 0-for-11.
Jason John (1-1) picked up the win, allowing three runs, all unearned, and six hits in six innings. John walked one and struck out six. Robert Batista earned his 11th save of the season with a perfect ninth inning.
Scott Roehl (2-6) allowed five runs and six hits in six innings for the Scrappers.
