Ozone Action Daydeclared for today
AUSTINTOWN -- The Eastgate Regional Council of Governments has declared today an Ozone Action Day in the Mahoning Valley.
Eastgate said that high levels of ozone in the Valley may worsen respiratory conditions for local residents or cause shortness of breath during outdoor activities. Ozone, which can irritate eyes and lungs and damage crops, is formed by chemical reactions under specific atmospheric conditions.
High temperatures and winds that bring pollutants into the area were expected to increase the amount of ozone in the atmosphere today. People should avoid filling their cars or using gas-powered lawnmowers until after 7 p.m., and to carpool to help combat ozone creation.
Ozone levels are expected to decrease Saturday, when forecasts are calling for cloudy skies and scattered showers.
