Update
The Youngstown Police Department traffic division has been cracking down on drivers hauling overweight loads. Here's what happened in municipal court to eight local men cited July 14:
Edward C. Davis Jr., 34, of Elwood Street. His dump truck was stopped on Center Street. The truck was allowed to carry 63,500 pounds but weighed 79,550 -- 16,050 pounds overweight. Municipal Judge Robert P. Milich fined Davis $640, gave him 30 days in jail, suspended it all, placed him on two years' probation and ordered him to attend a driving class.
Charles E. Shearer, 45, of Bedford Road S.E., Hubbard. His dump truck was stopped on Wick Avenue. The truck was allowed to carry 58,700 pounds but weighed 71,250 -- 12,550 pounds overweight. Judge Robert A. Douglas Jr. fined Shearer $538. Shearer could have received 30 days in jail.
Gregory L. Plunkett, 30, of East Friend Street, Columbiana. His dump truck was stopped on U.S. Route 422. The truck was allowed to carry 63,500 pounds but weighed 74,200 -- 10,700 pounds overweight. If guilty, he faces up to 30 days in jail and fines that total $428. Plunkett will be back in court Sept. 16.
Robert D. Ivory, 29, of Crandall Avenue. His dump truck was stopped on Interstate 680. The truck was allowed to carry 58,000 pounds but weighed 66,350 -- 8,350 pounds overweight. Judge Douglas fined him $297. Ivory could have received 30 days in jail.
Scott A. Quiggle, 38, of Airport Road, Warren. His tractor trailer was stopped on U.S. Route 422. The truck was allowed to carry 35,000 pounds but weighed 43,100 -- 8,100 pounds overweight. If guilty, he faces up to 30 days in jail and fines that total $292. He will be back in court Sept. 16.
Freddie Esposito, 30, of Perry Street, Struthers. His was stopped on Wilson Avenue. The truck was allowed to carry 35,000 pounds but weighed 41,900 -- 6,900 pounds overweight. If guilty, he faces up to 30 days in jail and fines that total $268. He will be back in court Aug. 25.
William J. Protiva, 44, of Ridge Road, Vienna. His dump truck was stopped on Interstate 680. The truck was allowed to carry 34,000 pounds but weighed 37,850 -- 3,850 pounds overweight. Judge Douglas fined Protiva $138.50. No jail time applied.
Roy D. Phifer, 47, of Lincoln Park Drive. His tractor trailer was stopped on U.S. Route 422. The truck was allowed to carry 80,000 pounds but weighed 82,150 -- 2,150 pounds overweight. Magistrate Anthony Sertick fined Phifer $102. No jail time applied.
