Late guitarist's son born
HARTFORD -- The late Ty Longley of Hartford, a guitarist with the rock band Great White who was killed in a nightclub fire in February, has a son.
His girlfriend, Heidi Peralta of Plainville, Ill., gave birth to Acey Ty Longley on Tuesday, said Pat Longley, Ty's father.
The baby weighed in at 7 pounds, 9 ounces.
Longley, 31, died when pyrotechnic devices sparked a fire just after Great White began playing in a nightclub in Rhode Island. Nearly 100 people died in the fire.
Turtle Soup Stag
NEW SPRINGFIELD -- The Petersburg Firemen's Association will host a Turtle Soup Stag from 6 p.m. to midnight Saturday at Richey's Woods, off Hoffmeister Road.
Admission is $10 at the door. Proceeds will go to the PFA.
West Nile virus in bird
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The state Department of Health reported the first case of West Nile virus found in a bird in Lawrence County.
An American crow found in Neshannock Township tested positive for the disease. It was one of three birds tested so far this year. The other two did not have West Nile, according to the health department.
State officials are warning residents to get rid of standing water in an effort to control mosquitoes. Mosquitoes can transmit the virus from infected birds to humans.
Morefield Road burglary
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Police said an unlocked window made an easy entry point for a burglar at a home in the 2900 block of Morefield Road.
The intruder took a small amount of cash, a cell phone, a dolphin figurine and three bottles of liquor.
Police said the burglary occurred sometime between Friday and Tuesday.
Senior town hall meeting
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- U.S. Rep. Phil English of Erie, R-3rd, will conduct a senior town hall meeting from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Greenville Senior Center, 339 E. Jamestown Road.
Medicare and access to quality health care will be the main topics of conversation.
Intersection to be repaired
SHARON, Pa. -- City officials said the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has agreed to repair the truck-damaged intersection of Connelly Boulevard and Dock Street.
The center of the intersection has been destroyed by heavy truck traffic making turns, leaving it riddled with deep potholes.
PennDOT initially refused to pick up the tab for the repairs, but city officials said the state agency has reversed its position and will fix the intersection. The cost was estimated at $200,000.
56th annual horse show
BROOKFIELD -- The Brookfield Saddle Club will host its 56th annual horse show Aug. 24 from 9 a.m. into the evening. A variety of horse breeds and riding disciplines will be featured.
Admission is free. Food will be provided by a class from Brookfield Methodist Church.
Show grounds are off state Route 82 on Bedford Road S.E.
Coitsville Garden work
COITSVILLE -- Neighbors, area residents and members of the Coitsville Historical Society are asking for help in restoring the Coitsville Garden, which was damaged by heavy rains.
Construction of the garden was spearheaded by Dorothy Morse, Coitsville Historical Society president, in memory of the victims of Sept. 11, 2001, and all others who have died in defense of the United States or in heroic efforts to help others.
Morse, a double amputee in ill health, is unable to do the gardening herself.
Volunteers will meet at the garden at 6 p.m. Monday. The garden is on McCartney Road near Begala Street and across from VFW Post 7600.
Inscribed paving bricks that will be installed at the garden are available for $50, $75 and $150. Money raised will fund garden upkeep.
