Catholic Diocese grants
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Catholic Diocese of Youngstown has announced the 2003-04 recipients of funds from the Catholic Elementary School Grant Program, based on applications submitted, need and other criteria. Local schools receiving funds are Immaculate Conception in Youngstown, $15,000; Saints Mary & amp; Joseph in Newton Falls, $2,000; St. Aloysius in East Liverpool, $10,000; St. Brendan in Youngstown, $10,000; St. Joseph the Provider in Campbell, $5,000; and St. Matthias in Youngstown, $7,000.

Computer is prize
Pupils age 8 to 16 have a change to win a home computer in the SOS Children's Villages -- USA "Family Homecoming" essay contest by submitting an essay about family, why they feel safe at home and what's special about their community to SOSessays@tds.net. The essay must discuss parents, siblings, home and community. Include name, address and telephone number. Deadline is Sept. 30.
Dana School auditions
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown State University Dana School of Music holds auditions Aug. 24 to 28 for registered students interested in the YSU Dana Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Concert Band and Brass Ensemble.

YSU theater auditions
YOUNGSTOWN -- Auditions for Youngstown State University theater shows, "Prisoner of Second Avenue" by Neil Simon and "Noises Off" by Michael Frayn are 4 to 7 p.m. Aug. 25 and 26 in Ford Theater, Bliss Hall. Grant awarded to KSU
KENT -- Kent State University has received one of 13 grants awarded by the U.S. Department of Education to help colleges and universities prevent high-risk binge drinking and violent behavior among college students. Chosen schools were selected from among 159 applicants. Kent's grant of $153,000 is for one year and renewable based on progress.
Donations increase
MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Allegheny College has received $3 million in donations to this year's annual fund -- an 11 percent increase over last year and a 54 percent increase over five years ago. The promise of alumni Dag and Julie Skattum to match all new and increased gifts amounted to the largest single annual fund commitment in the school's history. Donations support scholarships, academic departments, internships, library journals and databases, computer and lab resources, athletics, campus beautification and other items.
SRU shares library
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Slippery Rock University Bailey Library has opened its half-million volume collection to residents living in the 16057 ZIP code area. The library will issue borrower cards to residents who apply in person. Those under 18 need a parent's authorization.
Master's in curriculum

Institute for teachers
YOUNGSTOWN -- Fourteen Youngstown State University faculty members were chosen to participate in the first Summer Institute for Teacher-Scholars this August at YSU. Sponsored by the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning at YSU, the four-day institute provided intensive exploration of teaching and learning issues with participants developing projects to carry out in 2003-04. The program also includes yearlong support.
Participants were Javed Alam (civil engineering), Dora Bailey (education), Ray Beiersdorfer (geology), Jan Clymer (physics), Jeff Coldren (psychology), Eleanor Congdon (history), Karen Duda and Suzan Harper (computer science), Jay Gordon (English), Shirley Keller (social work), Jodie Krontiris-Litowotz (biological sciences), Walter Mathews (communication & amp; theater), Virginia Phillips (information systems) and Thomas Smotzer (mathematics).
