HARTFORD -- The late Ty Longley of Hartford, a guitarist with the rock band Great White who was killed in a nightclub fire in February, has a son. His girlfriend, Heidi Peralta of Plainville, Ill., gave birth to Acey Ty Longley on Tuesday, said Pat Longley, Ty's father. Longley, 31, died when pyrotechnic devices sparked a fire just after Great White began playing in a nightclub in Rhode Island. Nearly 100 people died in the fire.
Guilty of driving charge
NILES -- Joseph Stevens, Mineral Ridge Middle School teacher and former football coach charged with drunken driving, was found guilty Wednesday on a reduced charge. Stevens was fined $1,000 and received a 30-day suspended jail sentence for failure to control his vehicle. He pleaded no contest and was found guilty by visiting Municipal Judge Michael D. Joseph. A reckless-operation charge was dismissed. Stevens was arrested July 20 by McDonald police. He will continue to teach social studies at the middle school but is on paid administrative leave from coaching during this year's football season, said Rocco Adduci, superintendent of Weathersfield schools.
Closed for construction
YOUNGSTOWN -- Dearborn Avenue from Burlington to Robinwood roads was closed today until further notice for construction of the state Route 711 Connector. Dearborn Avenue at Sarah Street, the U.S. Route 422 passing lane from Division Street to Girard, and the southbound driving lanes of Belmont Avenue at Gypsy Lane already are closed. The $24.9 million project is scheduled for completion in fall 2005.
Man hurt on the job
HUBBARD -- A 49-year-old New Springfield man was injured Wednesday in an industrial accident at PSK Tool & amp; Die Co., 2960 Gale Road, Hubbard Township. William Burns is being treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center and was in critical condition early today. Township police Detective Mike Begeot said it's unclear what happened, but Burns received severe facial injuries while working with machinery.
Flower funds sought
LIBERTY -- Liberty in Bloom, a community-based group to beautify the township, is asking for funds to continue its work. A can for donations has been placed in the township administration building near the post office. This summer, six flower beds were planted, including those on Logan Way and Arbor Circle, at the administration building and Logangate Road fire station.
56th annual horse show
BROOKFIELD -- The Brookfield Saddle Club will host its 56th annual horse show Aug. 24 from 9 a.m. into the evening. A variety of horse breeds and riding disciplines will be featured. Admission is free. Food will be provided by a class from Brookfield Methodist Church. Show grounds are off state Route 82 on Bedford Road S.E.
Classic car cruise
WARREN -- A classic car cruise will be sponsored by the Allied Forces Car Club and Ali Baba Grotto Hall at the hall, Perkins-Jones Road, from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday. The grotto also will host a poker run and hog roast Aug. 24 to raise money for children with special needs. Free breakfast will be served starting at 10 a.m. at the Perkins-Jones Road Hall. Mecca corn roast
MECCA --The annual township corn roast will be Saturday in Mecca Community Park, beginning with a parade at 11:30 a.m. and concluding around 6 p.m. Music and an auction are planned, organizers say.
4th Ward meeting planned
WARREN -- Councilman Robert Holmes III, D-4th, will conduct a ward meeting at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Hippodrome, High Street, for residents to ask questions and talk about their concerns.
