Former area resident, wife mark golden event



XLOMA LINDA, Calif. -- Dr. and Mrs. George Summers of Loma Linda, Calif., celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Aug. 10 at the fellowship hall of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Mr. Summers, a former Youngstown resident, and the former Joan Behringer of Washington, Pa., were married Aug. 9, 1953, at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Washington.
Mrs. Summers graduated with a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Columbia Union College, Takoma Park, Md.
Her husband earned a bachelor's degree at Columbia Union College, a master's at Drexel University in Philadelphia and a doctorate from the University of Southern California.
The couple started their careers at Pittsburgh Junior Academy and then taught at Blue Mountain Academy, Hamburg, Pa. Mrs. Summers also taught at Pleasant Valley School District near Stroudsburg, Pa.
In 1979, Dr. Summers received an appointment as the head librarian for a new medical school at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He established a pre-clinical library for the school of medicine and a clinical library for a new teaching hospital, Prince of Wales Hospital, in Hong Kong. Mrs. Summers taught English to children at a Hong Kong school. They spent six years in China.
Dr. Summers was director of libraries for Loma Linda University for 17 years and retired 10 years ago as director of the library at East Stroudsburg University, Stroudsburg, Pa.
Their family includes two daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Dan Ford of Granite Bay, Calif., and Linda and Steve Dayen of Houston, and four grandsons.
