Five cows stolen
POLAND -- Township police are looking for five cows stolen from a Youngstown-Pittsburgh Road address earlier this week. Police reports say someone loaded the cattle from a barn into a trailer. The trailer, reports said, left gouge marks in the pavement leading into western Pennsylvania. The cows are valued at about $30,000.
Responding to speeders
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning County Sheriff's Department deputies are responding to complaints about speeders in Youngstown and elsewhere in the county and using a $74,000 Selective Traffic Enforcement Program grant to enforce traffic laws, said Maj. Michael Budd. The STEP grant expires in September, he said. In recent days, deputies have been on South Schenley Avenue and Bears Den and Shirley roads in Youngstown, he said.
Adult store robbed
YOUNGSTOWN -- A man who threatened to blow the head off a clerk at Adult Toys and Gifts on Market Street ran out with $50 and three magazines worth $33 late Thursday night, reports show. The clerk said the man entered the store at 1410 Market about 11 p.m., said he had a sawed-off shotgun under his shirt and gave her 45 seconds to turn over all the cash she had. The suspect fled in an undetermined direction. Police are examining the store's surveillance tape.
Millet Avenue girl raped
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 13-year-old Millet Avenue girl called her mother at work about 2:10 a.m. today, saying she'd been raped at home by a 15-year-old boy who came over to the house with his brother to borrow a tape, reports show. Police learned that the boy, who is staying with his cousin on Millet Avenue, is on probation to juvenile court for assault. During questioning, the boy acknowledged to police having sex with the girl but said it wasn't forced. The girl's version of what happened was backed up by a friend who heard crying coming from the bedroom. The boy was arrested on a rape charge and taken to the juvenile justice center.
Vandalism, theft in trucks
ELLSWORTH -- An employee of Keffler Construction, 9790 W. Akron-Canfield Road, heard glass breaking in the back lot Thursday and saw three boys breaking truck windows with rocks. The boys ran toward West Hill Drive. The Mahoning County Sheriff's Department is investigating the vandalism, which resulted in roughly $3,100 damage to 13 windows on four trucks, and the theft of a bulldog hood ornament worth $120.
Woman finds handgun
CAMPBELL -- A homeowner in the 400 block of Harmony Lane turned over a loaded .22-caliber handgun to police after she found it in her garage. According to police, the woman was cleaning her garage when she found the gun, loaded with four live rounds and two spent rounds, in a drawer. The woman told police she didn't know who the gun belonged to and that she didn't want it in her home. Police said the serial number had been scratched off the gun.
