AROUND THE HORN Wednesday's other games
AMERICAN LEAGUE
Devil Rays 6, Orioles 5, 10 innings
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- After Tampa Bay manager Lou Piniella was ejected during a hat-kicking tirade in the ninth inning, the Devil Rays beat Baltimore on Travis Lee's RBI double in the 10th. Carl Crawford had three of Tampa Bay's team-record six stolen bases. Piniella was tossed as the Orioles tied it against reliever Jesus Colome. Brian Roberts led off the ninth with a single and Luis Matos followed with a single. Matos took a wide turn after his hit and had to hustle back to first -- and when he was called safe, Piniella flew into a rage.
Royals 11, Yankees 0
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kevin Appier allowed three hits over six innings as Kansas City won its first home series from New York since 1993. Mike Sweeney drove in four runs and Brent Mayne had four hits and two RBIs for the Royals. The Yankees have lost four of five. This was their most lopsided loss of the year.
Rangers 7, Tigers 3
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Rafael Palmeiro hit a three-run homer and Alex Rodriguez had a two-run shot for Texas. Palmeiro's 29th homer in the second inning gave the Rangers a 6-1 lead. Rodriguez's 32nd put Texas ahead 2-0 in the first. R.A. Dickey (7-5) allowed three runs and seven hits over six innings to win his third straight start.
Angels 2, White Sox 1
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Tim Salmon hit a tie-breaking RBI double in the eighth inning, and Jarrod Washburn outpitched Mark Buehrle. Buehrle (10-12) gave up hits to all three batters he faced in the eighth. Singles by Alfredo Amezaga and Garret Anderson put runners at the corners and Salmon lined the left-hander's 98th and last pitch to the wall in right-center. Washburn, trying to win consecutive starts for the first time since June 4, allowed a run and four hits over 6 2/3 innings.
Red Sox 7, Athletics 3
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Manny Ramirez and Kevin Millar homered and drove in three runs apiece as Boston again pulled even with Oakland in the wild card race. Bill Mueller had a run-scoring single among his three hits as the Red Sox won for just the second time in seven games. The Red Sox canceled Mark Mulder's plans for his 16th victory with a bevy of singles in the third, followed by Ramirez's two-run homer -- his 28th of the season -- in the seventh.
Mariners 13, Blue Jays 6
SEATTLE -- Ichiro Suzuki and Randy Winn each had a triple and finished with three RBIs and three runs scored apiece. Bret Boone drove in three runs to boost his season total to 95 -- third-best in the American League. Julio Mateo (3-0) got the victory after relieving Seattle starter Ryan Franklin with two outs in the fourth. Mateo pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowing one hit and striking out four.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Cubs 6, Astros 4
CHICAGO -- Moises Alou hit a three-run homer and Chicago's bullpen didn't allow a run over the final 4 2/3 innings. Houston lefty Jeriome Robertson (11-6), bidding to become the first rookie this season with 12 wins, entered the fifth with a 4-3 lead before giving up singles to Kenny Lofton and Alex Gonzalez. Dan Miceli relieved and struck out Sammy Sosa before Alou lofted a long drive to left for his 18th homer, sending the Cubs ahead 6-4.
Braves 7, Padres 1
ATLANTA -- Mike Hampton extended his winning streak to seven and Chipper Jones and Vinny Castilla homered. Hampton (10-5) allowed only three hits in eight innings.
Phillies 11, Brewers 4
PHILADELPHIA -- Jim Thome homered twice and Kevin Millwood (12-8) allowed three runs and six hits over seven innings for his second win in six starts. Keith Ginter hit a three-run homer for the Brewers. Bobby Abreu had three hits, three RBIs and three runs scored, while Placido Polanco had two hits and scored three runs for the Phillies.
Diamondbacks 3, Reds 1
CINCINNATI -- Luis Gonzalez hit a two-run homer, capping an eighth-inning rally that sent the Arizona to their 16th consecutive win over Cincinnati. Gonzalez's 21st homer, off Felix Heredia (5-2), capped a three-run inning and led Arizona to its fourth win in a row. The Reds lost for the seventh time in eight games and have not beaten Arizona since May 21, 2001.
Mets 9, Giants 2
NEW YORK -- Mike Piazza homered and drove in five runs in his return to the lineup. Playing his first major league game since severely straining his right groin May 16 in San Francisco, Piazza grounded out his first time up, then connected for a two-run shot, his eighth homer of the season, in the third. Steve Trachsel (11-7) allowed two runs and eight hits in 7 2/3 innings. One night after hitting two homers to reach 650 for his career, Bonds went 1-for-3.
Marlins 2, Dodgers 1, 11 innings
MIAMI -- Mike Mordecai hit the second game-winning homer by a reserve for Florida in as many nights. Mordecai's two-out homer was his second of the year -- and both have been game-winners. He pinch-ran for Mike Lowell on July 23, then homered in the 12th to beat Atlanta.
Expos 6, Rockies 5
MONTREAL -- After an electrical failure briefly plunged the ballpark into complete darkness, Brian Schnieder hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning and Javier Vazquez had an RBI triple in the fourth. The power went out in Olympic Stadium in the second inning while Vazquez (10-9) was in the middle of his windup. Preston Wilson homered, his 30th, off Vazquez to start the inning to put the Rockies up 1-0. Todd Helton hit his 26th homer, a two-run shot in the fifth.
