SKIN CARE Protect yourself
Pumping out a splotch of sunscreen and slathering it on yourself and your kids isn't all it takes to protect yourself from the sun's harmful rays. Here are some tips on caring for your skin from Dr. David Orentreich, a consulting dermatologist to Clinique:
Buy a fresh bottle of sunscreen. The lotion you used over the dry winter months may be too heavy for the warmer summer months. People with oily skin should use a light or oil-free sunscreen and people with dry skin should use a moisturizing formula.
Exfoliate frequently during the summer to help prevent acne and clogged pores.
To care for oilier-than-usual skin caused by perspiration and increased temperature, use less moisturizer and switch to an oil-free foundation. If needed, control oil with treatment products such as Clinique's Pore Minimizer T-Zone Shine Control ($13.50).
Apply sunscreen generously, leaving a thin film on the skin 20-30 minutes before heading out into the sun. Reapply every two hours, and more frequently after perspiring or swimming.
