Planners want council to limit size of political signs
COLUMBIANA -- The city planning commission will recommend to council a change in the requirements for political signs.
Bob Belding, building and zoning inspector, said the commission wants to keep the size of stationary political signs at a maximum 32 square feet but recommends the city not limit the size of political signs on vehicles.
Complaints about candidates' parking tractor trailers around the city with the entire sides of the trailer painted as a political ad led to the council's limit on the size of moving signs.
Atty. Robert Hum, a Fairfield Township trustee and former Columbiana city councilman, sued the city after he was cited for violating the ordinance by using a semi trailer sign.
He said the limitation was a violation of the First Amendment. Hum ultimately won the case.
