hHorticulturist shares tips in 'Trowel & amp; Error'
Horticulturist Sharon Lovejoy has been gardening since childhood and collecting gardening tips almost that long. She shares more than 700 of her tricks, remedies and other garden helps in her latest book, "Trowel & amp; Error."
The cheerfully illustrated book contains a wealth of homespun pointers, including such why-didn't-I-think-of-that tips as sticking a spade into the soil and using the handle to hold a garden hose, and painting measurements onto a long-handled tool so you'll always have a yardstick handy. The book includes information and ideas for homemade fertilizers, pest and weed control, seed-starting, lawn care, houseplants, and even garden art.
"Trowel & amp; Error" is published by Workman Publishing Co. It's priced at $13.95 in paperback.
Old pop bottles makeconvenient wasp traps
Old pop bottles become bug busters with McNaughton Inc.'s Soda Bottle Wasp Trap.
The daisy-shaped gadget screws onto a bottle filled with nondiet soda, beer or sugar water. Wasps, hornets and yellow jackets are attracted to the liquid and enter through openings in the trap, but they can't get out.
When the bottle fills up with bugs, you can just replace the bottle cap and toss the bottle into the trash, or you can empty the bottle and either refill it with liquid or recycle it.
The company also makes hummingbird and thistle feeders that reuse old bottles.
The wasp trap can be ordered online at www.gadjits.com or by phone at 800-423-5487. The price is $4, but shipping is extra.
