Area attorney, ex-workersettle a civil lawsuit
WARREN -- A local attorney has agreed to settle a civil lawsuit with a former employee.
George Kafantaris has reached an agreement with Karen Longstreth, a former secretary.
Had the agreement not been reached a second trial on the matter was scheduled to begin Monday.
The terms of the settlement were not released.
Longstreth sued Kafantaris for battery and sexual harassment.
A jury in May 2002 sided with Kafantaris, who admitted on the witness stand having an affair with the woman.
Kafantaris agreed to a one-year suspension from practicing law for lying about having sexual relations with Longstreth in a sworn deposition.
Six months of the suspension was stayed per an agreement with the Ohio Supreme Court's Disciplinary Counsel.
Kafantaris began serving the suspension about three months ago.
Girard asks customersto read water meters
GIRARD -- City water customers are being asked to read their own meters because readers in the water, sewer and street departments who normally do it are being used for flood-related cleanup.
Customers are asked to call in their readings to a recording at (330) 545-7047 or pick up a card at the water department and return it with the reading.
Those who don't read their own meters by Aug. 18 will receive an estimated bill.
Warren man posts bondin teen's sex-assault case
GIRARD -- A 21-year-old Warren man is free on a $10,000 bond after his arrest on a charge of unlawful sexual conduct with a 14-year-old girl.
Capt. Frank Bigowsky said David Grayhouse of West Howard Street sexually assaulted the girl in April. The girl's mother filed a complaint with Trumbull County Children Services.
Head-on collision leavesman, woman injured
CANFIELD -- A Youngstown man was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center early today after a head-on collision on East Main Street.
Sonny Pieton, 42, of McGuffey Road, was in critical condition at the hospital this morning.
The driver of the second car, Judie Conti, 61, of Wildwood Drive, Boardman, was taken to Forum Health Northside Medical Center, where she was in guarded condition this morning.
Police said Pieton was driving west on East Main Street near Elizabeth Place at about midnight when he crossed over the center line and into eastbound traffic, striking a car driven by Conti. Both cars were going the speed limit, 35 miles per hour.
Couple caught nakedface multiple charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- A man and a woman found naked inside a car in the parking lot of East Middle School on East High Street were arrested at 11 p.m. Monday. Police seized a gun and drugs.
The passenger, Keith Davenport, 22, of Park Heights, was arrested on charges of carrying a concealed weapon and drug-abuse marijuana. He was also served with two warrants for failure to appear in municipal court a year ago on separate charges of driving without a license and driving under suspension.
Davenport's companion, the driver, Sonya Bebbs, 24, of Mabel Street was arrested on a charge of carrying a concealed weapon. Police said they found a 9 mm handgun and magazine with 17 live rounds on the rear seat with Davenport's pants and Bebbs' bra on top of the gun.
Inside Davenport's pants were eight small bags of suspected marijuana, reports show.
Culvert replacement
VERNON -- Orangeville-Kinsman Road, about a half-mile south of state Route 88, will be closed for culvert replacement Wednesday and Thursday.
The Trumbull County engineer's office recommends motorists detour west on Route 88, south on Route 7, east on Route 609 to the state line and north on Brockway Sharon Road.
Cancer Survivorship Day
WARREN -- Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital will recognize cancer survivors at the 14th annual Cancer Survivorship Day from 2 to 4 p.m. Sept. 7 at Packard Music Hall.
Entertainment will be provided throughout the day by jazz guitarist Teddy Pantelas.
The event concludes with a 4 p.m. live butterfly release.
TMH began releasing live butterflies nearly 10 years ago, and since then, hospitals throughout the country have adopted the butterfly as a symbol of life, TMH officials said.
