After chase, police capture and charge Poland man

STRUTHERS -- A Poland man was in the Mahoning County Jail today under $12,500 bond pending an appearance in Struthers Municipal Court on Friday.
Keith J. Grzelewski, 39, of 7093 North Lima Road, is charged with passing bad checks, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, driving under suspension, failure to comply with a police officer, resisting arrest and theft. Police said he led them on a chase through several communities late Saturday.
According to police reports, officers tried to stop Grzelewski on a traffic violation on Youngstown-Poland Road about 11:55 p.m. but he drove away at a high rate of speed. The chase went through Struthers to Interstate 680 to I-80 and state Route 46 in Austintown, where spike strips were deployed to flatten the tires, police said.
Police said that after driving over the spike strips, Grzelewski lost control of his vehicle on an exit ramp, slid off the road and then took off on foot.
Police said they found him hiding in a drainage ditch.
Earlier in the day, the police report says, Grzelewski crashed into a Girard cruiser while officers were pursuing him after a theft from the Target store in Niles.
Girard police also filed charges against Grzelewski and asked Struthers officers to place a hold on him for them, the report states.
Grzelewski was arraigned here Monday and is to appear for a preliminary hearing on the charge of passing bad checks and for trial on the other charges Friday morning.
