COMBINED DISPATCHES
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Add a new head coach and the Heisman Trophy winner to the Cincinnati Bengals and what do they get? The same result.
The Bengals bumbled through their preseason opener under new coach Marvin Lewis and No. 1 overall pick Carson Palmer had two interceptions returned for touchdowns as the New York Jets won 28-13 on Sunday.
Playing through a steady rain, the Bengals had a fumble and two personal foul penalties and botched a field goal -- in the first half alone. Palmer, who won the Heisman as a senior at Southern California last season, entered the game at the start of the second half and led the Bengals to their two scoring drives.
But he also had two passes intercepted and returned for scores.
Trailing 14-7 and driving with two minutes remaining, Palmer was intercepted by Wes Bautovich, who went 78 yards for a touchdown to make it 21-7 with 1:44 remaining.
On the next possession, Troy Grant intercepted Palmer and went 36 yards for a touchdown to increase the Jets' lead. Palmer threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Chesley Borders with eight seconds remaining to cap the scoring. He finished 12-of-22 for 140 yards in his NFL debut.
Cardinals 13, Cowboys 0
TEMPE, Ariz. -- Emmitt Smith made a cameo appearance against his old team and Dallas was shut out in Bill Parcells' debut as coach Saturday night.
Bill Gramatica kicked field goals from 40 and 27 yards, and Kevin Kasper scored on a 35-yard reverse to give Arizona the win.
Smith participated in the Cardinals' first three plays, then called it a night. The NFL's career rushing leader carried for no gain on the game's first play. Then on third-and-10, he took a pass from Jeff Blake and dodged a couple of Cowboys for an 11-yard gain and a first down.
Seahawks 20, Chargers 7
SEATTLE -- Matt Hasselbeck completed six of his first seven passes and finished 8-of-11 for 75 yards for Seattle.
Shaun Alexander and Maurice Morris each scored on a 1-yard touchdown run as the Seahawks built a 14-0 halftime lead.
Seahawks linebacker Orlando Huff will miss the next three-to-four weeks with a strained right knee ligament.
Packers
GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Nose tackle Gilbert Brown, the shock-absorbing anchor of Green Bay's run defenses for almost a decade, has played his final snap this season and possibly in his career.
Brown suffered a torn right biceps muscle on a freak play Saturday night in the Packers' 27-21 exhibition victory over the Atlanta Falcons and coach Mike Sherman announced Sunday that he was out for the year.
Patriots
FOXBORO, Mass. -- Guard Brendan Stai retired Sunday, less than two weeks after signing a one-year contract. Stai, 31, played eight NFL seasons. Originally a third-round draft pick from Nebraska in 1995, Stai was a rookie starter at right guard in the Super Bowl for the Steelers against Dallas. He spent five seasons with Pittsburgh and also played for four other teams.
Titans
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Free safety Lance Schulters has Bell's Palsy, a virus that has partially paralyzed the left side of his face, the Titans announced Sunday. Schulters sat out the Titans' exhibition opener Saturday night, forcing the team to replace him with rookie Donnie Nickey. But coach Jeff Fisher said Schulters has been cleared to practice and play. Schulters is being treated with steroids and other medicine. He also must wear an eye patch to help him sleep and keep his eye from drying out.
Dolphins
DAVIE, Fla. -- Quarterback Jay Fiedler returned to practice Sunday after missing the team's first preseason game with back spasms. Meanwhile, starting left tackle Mark Dixon did not practice and is scheduled to undergo an MRI exam on his ankle.
Giants
ALBANY, N.Y. -- Wide receiver Ron Dixon was fined an undisclosed amount of money and thrown out of coach Jim Fassel's office on Saturday for missing a treatment on his surgically repaired right knee and a team meeting. Dixon has yet to practice in camp because of the injury.
Texans
HOUSTON -- Running back James Allen decided to retire on Sunday. Allen missed training camp drills late last week and sat out Saturday night's preseason loss to Denver because of personal issues, the Texans said.
