Grove City recognizedfor academics
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The American Volleyball Coaches Association named Grove City with its AVCA Team Academic Award for 2002-03.
Grove City was one of 26 NCAA Division III programs to receive the award, which is given to programs whose players maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or better. It is the third straight year that Grove City earned the honor.
Horse trials
MIDDLEFIELD -- The South Farm Fall Horse Trials will be held Aug. 23-24.
There are three phases to eventing: dressage, cross-country and show jumping.
South Farm is located on Bundysburg Road, a half-mile south of Ohio route 87.

Columbiana wins three at soccer preview
BOARDMAN -- Barry Kimpel scored two goals as the Columbiana High edged Niles 2-1 in a soccer preview at Boardman. David Cramer of the Clippers had seven saves and Andrew Stryfeller had 15 stops.
Kimpel again scored two goals at the Clippers blanked Boardman's junior varsity 2-0. Brian Glick had 17 stops and Cramer made seven saves in goal.
In the final 35-minute contest Kimpbel scored the only goal on an assist from Jeff Harrold as Columbiana shutout Warren Harding 1-0. Glick had 15 stops and Cramer nine saves.
Correction
Pat Nelson is the manager for Chris Koval and Tommy Cordell is the trainer.
Nelson was incorrectly referred to the trainer in Sunday's editions.

READING, Pa. -- Kenny Rayborn scattered five hits over seven innings as the Akron Aeros beat the Reading Phillies 3-2 Sunday in the Eastern League.

Castroneves winsIRL race
MADISON, Ill. -- Helio Castroneves drove without any cockpit electronics to win the Emerson Indy 250 and end his 20-race winless streak.
Castroneves, who came within a few feet of at least two other wins since taking the checkered flag at the 2002 Indianapolis 500, got a big break this time when dominating Scott Dixon dropped out with a gearbox problem while leading with 43 of 200 laps remaining at Gateway International Raceway.
A crewman for Al Unser Jr. was injured in a pit accident during the race.
Anton Julian, Unser's left rear tire changer, was transported by helicopter to a hospital in St. Louis, where his condition was upgraded from serious to fair after several tests were completed. He was expected to be kept overnight for observation.
Clijsters is new No. 1
CARSON, Calif. -- Kim Clijsters became the new No. 1 in women's tennis Sunday, outlasting Lindsay Davenport 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 to win the JPMorgan Chase Open for her tour-high sixth title of the year.
Clijsters takes over the top spot from the injured Serena Williams, who will trail by less than 45 points when the WTA Tour rankings come out today.

TULA, Russia -- Russia's Gulnara Samitova set a world record in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase Sunday with a time of 9 minutes, 8.33 seconds.
Samitova beat the record of 9:16.51 set by Belarus' Alesya Turova in Gdansk, Poland, on July 27, 2002.
