AUSTINTOWN TWP. Trustees' actions



On Monday, township trustees:
Approved a resolution placing a 2.5-mill levy for police on the November ballot. The levy, which has no expiration date, would generate about $1.4 million each year. Township officials said the owner of a $100,000 home would pay an additional $78 per year. Officials have said the township will have a $1.2 million deficit at the end of this year without budget cuts or additional revenue.
Approved a three-year contract with township firefighters retroactive to Jan. 1. The contract calls for firefighters to receive 3-percent annual raises and pay some of their health-care costs. Township Administrator Michael Dockry has said salary and benefit increases in the contract will cost the township $165,000 over three years.
Accepted a $67,000 state grant to restart a scaled-down version of the juvenile diversion program, which was canceled in May because of financial concerns. The money will allow trustees to bring back a full-time caseworkers and one of the two part-time caseworkers who were laid off.
Agreed to lease an office in a township building at 102 Westchester Drive to the United Auto Workers. The five-year lease calls $1,200 a month rent.
Announced that Wal-Mart has not decided if it will build a Sam's Club in the township or expand the Wal-Mart on Mahoning Avenue.
