WUSA
CARY, N.C. -- Kelly Smith's missed penalty shot during injury time completed a disappointing season for the Philadelphia Charge. Smith hit the left post as the Charge and the Carolina Courage played to a 1-1 tie in the finale for both teams. Neither the Charge (5-11-5) nor the defending champion Courage (7-10-4) are advancing to the playoffs. Smith's penalty shot came after Carolina's Danielle Borgman dragged down Stacey Tullock in the penalty area. "That just summed up the year," said Smith, who returned late in the season from a knee ligament injury. "It just wasn't meant to be. It has just been a bad season." Birgit Prinz gave Carolina the early lead when she took a pass from Staci Burt, drove past the Charge's defense and got a shot past goalkeeper Hope Solo. Pavlina Scasna tied the game at the 12:43 mark when she beat two Courage defenders and deflected a shot off Carolina goalie Danielle Slaton. The Charge missed another chance in the 76th minute when Smith's shot sailed wide of the open net. Carolina's Marcia Wallis bounced a ball off the crossbar in the 90th minute. The Courage end the year winless in its last four games, while last-place Philadelphia failed to win in its final five on the road. Philadelphia outshot Carolina 18-16, but the Courage put eight shots on goal compared to the Charge's six.
Spirit 2, Freedom 1
SAN DIEGO -- Christine Latham scored in the 58th minute and assisted on the quickest goal in San Diego's history. Latham sent a crossing pass to Julie Fleeting, who scored her 11th goal of the season 1:23 into the game. The previous record for the Spirit's fastest goal was set by Zhang Ouying when she scored in the third minute against New York last season. The Freedom rebounded to tie on a goal by Steffi Jones three minutes into the second half. The Spirit (8-6-7) clinched third place in the WUSA, ahead of the Freedom (9-8-4).

NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- Steve Jolley scored in the 86th minute to rally the MetroStars to a 1-1 tie with the Chicago Fire. Chicago forward Damani Ralph tied the MLS rookie record with his eighth goal this season. He bounced a shot off the far post to give Chicago the lead in the 22nd minute.
