Purtzer cards 66 to lead by shot
BLAINE, Minn. (AP) -- Tom Purtzer birdied the final hole to cap a six-under 66 and grab a one stroke lead atop a crowded leader board Saturday following two rounds of the 3M Championships.
Don Pooley, Hugh Baiocchi, Ben Crenshaw and Wayne Levi were tied for second place at eight under. First-round co-leaders Jim Thorpe and Morris Hatalsky were in a sixth-place tie at six under with Gil Morgan, James Mason and Mike Smith.
Pooley, who started the day tied for 47th place, made nine birdies from holes 3 through 17 in a bogey-free round that produced a tournament- and course-record 63.
Baiocchi birdied three of his final eight holes and shot 67.
Crenshaw, who ranks 81st on this year's money list with no top-25 finishes, shot 67. He survived a triple-bogey seven on the par-four 14th that included a ball in the water and a missed 3-foot putt. He countered with birdies on holes 15, 16 and 18.
Levi birdied three of the last four holes and shot 68.
Pooley's 63 matched his best score in his three years on the Champions Tour. Pooley missed a 7-foot putt on No. 18 that if good would have given him a 62. Pooley, the 2002 U.S. Senior Open Champion, had shoulder surgery last January and is playing in just his seventh Champions Tour event this season.
