MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL Ersted put on disabled list with hamstring tendinitis
The injury has been nagging him all season long.
CLEVELAND (AP) -- Anaheim Angels outfielder Darin Erstad was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with tendinitis in his right hamstring, the same injury that has been nagging him all season.
Erstad, who has been told he may eventually need surgery to fix his hamstring, said he has been unable to do anything without pain and that rest wasn't helping.
He aggravated the injury on Wednesday night in Boston.
On Friday, he underwent an MRI at the Cleveland Clinic and was told by Dr. John Bergfeld, the Browns' team physician, that the injury was no better or worse than it was when he originally hurt it in April.
"A couple of days isn't going to cure this stuff," Erstad said. "I tried to swing and I can't do it."
Erstad missed 42 games earlier this season with the injury before returning from the DL on June 9. He is batting just .224 since coming back, and hasn't been the same aggressive player who helped the Angels win the World Series last year.
Erstad said doctors have recommended he begin deep-massage therapy on his hamstring immediately.
"We're getting information on what we can do," he said. "Hopefully, we can get to the bottom of this."
Erstad has been told that surgery would give him enough rehab time to be ready for spring training. Doctors have also informed him that he can play the rest of this season without doing any more damage, as long as he can handle the pain.
Chone Figgins was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake to fill Erstad's roster spot.
Between games of their day-night doubleheader Saturday, the Angels also optioned Kevin Gregg back to Salt Lake and recalled reliever Bart Miadich.
Gregg made his major league debut in the opener, getting a no-decision after allowing one run and four hits with six strikeouts in six innings.
"I just tried to throw strikes and locate my pitches," said Gregg, who had 14 family members on hand for his debut.
