KEYSTONE CLIPS July rain drowns out average
So, how wet was it during the month of July?
Very wet, according to data kept by the Shenango Valley Division of Consumers Pennsylvania Water Co.
Total precipitation for the month reached 11.38 inches, well above the normal 4.35 inches for the month of July in the Shenango Valley.
That raised the total precipitation so far this year to 29.43 inches, above the average of 23.14 inches for the first seven months of the year.
The high level of rainfall is reflected in repeated flooding of low-lying areas reported by authorities, and the Shenango River Lake being 10 feet above its normal summer pool level.
Certificate for troops
Pennsylvanians serving in the military as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom are entitled to a special certificate from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. State Rep. Rod Wilt of Greenville, R-17th, wants to make sure every eligible service member gets that certificate. The document includes the text of House Resolution 167, which was created to show support and appreciation to the members of each branch of the military.
For security reasons, the U.S. military isn't providing lists of service members abroad, so Wilt is asking their family members and friends to relay that information to his office. They can call (724) 588-8911, his Greenville office; (814) 337-8132, his Vernon Township office; or (800) 457-2040 with the service member's name, rank and home address.
Historical society grant
Lawrence County's historical society is getting some help from the state. State Rep. Chris Sainato of New Castle, D-9th, announced that the society will receive a $7,125 state grant to help improve community services.
To qualify for the money, organizations must be certified as official county historical societies and must receive matching operating funds from the county. Sainato said 44 county historical societies received a total of $355,975 from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission this year.
