KENT STATE Noted speaker will address graduates
The speaker earned master's and doctoral degrees at Kent.
KENT -- Dr. Judy L. Genshaft, sixth president of the University of South Florida, will speak at the Kent State University commencement ceremony slated for 10 a.m. Saturday in the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center on campus.
More than 1,260 graduates will receive degrees.
Honorary doctorate
Receiving an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree is Herbert Gallen.
Gallen spent more than 50 years at the helm of the privately owned Ellen Tracy Co., which he founded, achieving international recognition as a leader and innovator in the fashion industry.
He now shares his expertise by providing opportunities for students in Kent State's School of Fashion Design and Merchandising; he and his wife, Linda Allard, established a scholarship and an endowment that create linkages between the fashion industry and students.
About the speaker
Genshaft earned a 1975 doctorate in counseling psychology and a 1973 master's in school counseling at Kent State. Her undergraduate degree in social work and psychology is from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
As president of the University of South Florida, she has helped the institution earn national recognition, enrollment of more than 39,000 and research contract and grant funding of more than $207 million.
She joined the university in 2000, after serving as provost and vice president of academic affairs, and dean of the College of Education at the University of Albany in New York; and professor, department chairman and associate provost at Ohio State University.
No tickets are required to attend the ceremony; guests must be seated by 9:30 a.m. Parking is free and shuttle buses will be running. A reception will be held after the ceremony on Risman Plaza or, in case of rain, in the Ballroom of the Kent Student Center.
