Ellsworth Road to close
YOUNGSTOWN -- Ellsworth Road, between Bailey and Duck Creek roads in Ellsworth Township, will be closed Thursday while crews from the Mahoning County Engineer's office replace a culvert.
Traffic will be detoured along Duck Creek Road, U.S. Route 224 and Bailey Road. The project is expected to be completed in one day.
Work began today in preparation for replacement of a bridge on Shields Road in Boardman Township. County Engineer Richard Marsico said the bridge will remain open until next year, when it will be closed for the actual replacement.
YWCA open house
YOUNGSTOWN -- The YWCA will have an open house Aug. 21 at its newest child-care center, which is at Mill Creek Baptist Church, 2007 South Schenley Avenue on the West Side.
The open house runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
The center will begin operating Sept. 2, offering year-round preschool and day care for children ages 3 and up and after-school care for ages 6 to 12.

Golf equipment stolen
CANFIELD -- A garage door raised about 30 inches to allow a homeowner's dog to come and go on Fawn Drive was used instead by a thief over the weekend, according to the Mahoning County Sheriff's Department.
Taken from the garage were a pressure washer, golf clubs, golf bag, golf shoes and golf balls worth about $2,600 total, reports show.
The theft was discovered Saturday afternoon.
Habitat house for nurse
YOUNGSTOWN -- Habitat for Humanity of Mahoning County will dedicate its 10th new home at 10 a.m. Tuesday at 1901 Porter Ave. on the East Side.
The home goes to Linda Thompson, a school nurse at East Middle School, and her three children, ages 11, 9 and 8. As the agency requires, the family put in 350 hours of work in building the three-bedroom, one-bath home.
The Mahoning County Habitat group has built or rehabilitated 16 houses since 1989.
Gun goes off in struggle
YOUNGSTOWN -- Terry Robinson, 25, resisted arrest early today and struggled with Patrolman Bill Ward over the officer's gun, which discharged during the struggle, reports show. No one was injured.
Police had been sent to Robinson's home in the 900 block of East Philadelphia Avenue for a domestic violence arrest. Robinson jumped from his car after almost striking a cruiser on East Philadelphia, ran and was found by Ward near a garage, police said.
Robinson refused commands at gunpoint to show his hands and charged the officer, police said. A struggle ensued, and Ward was pushed into a fence. Robinson grabbed Ward's right wrist and twisted the gun toward the officer's face, police said. When Ward forced Robinson to the ground, the gun discharged.
Robinson remained combative and kicked another officer and had to be restrained by deputies at the Mahoning County jail, reports show.
He faces charges of assault on a police officer, driving under suspension and domestic violence.
Salem pub robbed
SALEM -- Someone entered a downtown business and stole an undisclosed amount of money from the cash register, police reported.
The theft occurred at Rickey's English Pub, 151 E. State Street.
The crime was reported about 12:44 a.m. today. It's believed the money was taken after 10 p.m. Sunday, police said.
Woman cut in dispute
AUSTINTOWN -- A 25-year-old Fountain Square woman suffered multiple cuts from a kitchen knife early Sunday during a domestic dispute, police said.
The victim told police at 5:24 a.m. Sunday that her boyfriend assaulted her with a steak knife at their residence. She said he cut her on her right arm, both legs and feet, right index finger and the left side of her face. She said she was hit on the back of the head with the handle of the knife.
He was arrested and was to be charged with felonious assault today in Mahoning County Court.
